Quick question. How many tons does Root need to get and how quickly, before he’s considered top 3 in the world again?

He's only behind Smith atm. KW is great but he doesn't get to play often enough in varied conditions. Root's batting in SL, India, and now this series has been superb.

If we combine 2020 and 2021 for the purposes of this, this is Root's first really top-tier year since maybe 2017 or even 2016. Williamson in that same period has been consistently excellent with very few misses. Clear gap imo.

Smith and Babar are the two best. 3 is up for grabs.

Babar is obviously class but I don't think his Test record screams 'best after Smith'.

Honestly, Root's form since the return of international cricket is a really strong argument that teams should give their best and most important players six months off with zero cricket in the middle of their careers just to mentally recharge.

Sadly you might be right. But I still expect all bodies to get the Ashes underway at any cost. Plus Australia should be nearing its vaccination targets by that point.
