Whatever it takes!!!
This would be great.

How many runs can Root score before Maharaj skittles the rest of the team?
How many runs can SA score off Mark Wood before Joe Root brings himself on and takes a 6-fer?
Should England make James Bracey try and keep wicket for the lols?
Etc.
Most pertinently, who is the next bowler Root is gonna break after Archer? Will it be Stokes after an unchanged spell throughout a session where he gets less wicket opportunities than the times he is called lion-hearted ? Or will it be Anderson after bowling 10 overs on the trot and then just leaving the team mid-pitch a la WWE tag team breakups when the one guy just walks back to the locker room leaving the rest get beaten up by the opponents?

I think stick to one match winner take all. A three match series will be too much tension for the players and be stressful. The pressure the batsman talked about being under during this final was unprecedented and having too much adrenaline released over an extended period if weeks is not healthy for a humans body
Ice hockey and MLB have best of 7 but those matches take 3 hours each
Your team just needs to get up for the challenge. Odi world cup works like that and the best team always wins the knockout matches

It was aptly named the ultimate test and was everything the icc hoped for in terms of intensity and next level play
The run rates were historically low in the match due to the pitch but also the fact the bowlers put in their very best efforts ever in terms of accuracy and pressure. Kane indicated it was the tightest bowling he had experienced.
The game was next level so don't change the formula at all, 6 days was a perfect idea and whoever suggested a reserve day should get a thank you
India if they want to Contemplate changes should have ensured a warm up against a county side. Their batsman looked raw and undercooked
Other teams in the worid like Australia and South Africa and England hopefully found the match compelling so that all concerned support the next iteration and aspire that their country is in the final

Cricket was the winner of the test championship
It was the most amazing test I have seen all things considered. Hopefully all fans want to see their team in the final next time. And hopefully all will want a winner take all one match final.

Hello honestbharani thanks for your welcome
I can't recall that debate over Steve Smith but it probably happened as his technique violates my sense of proprietariness
Cheers

Interesting take. I wonder if you would also describe it as the ultimate test if the situation was reversed in the future.

Say for instance if NZ topped the WTC table after some hard fought overseas victories after which the final was held in Sri Lanka where India had only a week before completed another Lanka wash and the BC landed there with a weeks notice and then lost the toss on a raging turner.

Actually yeah we would love it

Would make the ensuing innings victory for NZ all the sweeter.

One thing that did kinda annoy me was the conspiracy mongering from the derpier corners of the nz cricket community that the switch from Lords to Southampton was a BCCI driven plot to tip the scales in India’s favour.

Would have gained steam too but Anderson's friends came over and literally poured water over it. :p

I've no problem with a one off test at all. I would love a 3 test series final because that will mean more test cricket of high quality but tests are not something you can fluke anyway. You have to be better than the other team to beat them.

Yeah defo favouring the same thing single final approach, makes it more high intensity like this one. Just unlimited reserve days to make sure the 450 overs are bowled in + whatever tweaking the group stages need. We can get terrific tests in the group stage imo (and we did get some great tests tbh).

hmm maybe. southee is significantly taller than boult and bowls corridor with great variation of seam and angle, and wagner and ferguson both bring obvious good attributes for australian tours, but while 2015 was the fault of two half fit bowlers and no test standard back up beyond them, 2019 was all to do with the batsmen.

an attack of hadlee, bond and cowie would have had an uphill climb defending the scores we made.
thinking for no reason about mitchell starc breaching international law by cruelly and unusually punishing mark craig on live tv

One match is good for a final. Think about 2 reserve days next time. Timeless is an option if the players are up to it

India heavily outperformed themselves in the 1st innings thanks to the wayward bowling from the opening bowlers and the genius decision to have De Grandhomme bowl ahead of Wagner. Without that, India likely settle for under 150 and the rest of the match turned into one big beatdown. The rain delays played their part by adding on to the tension of overs running out otherwise the target would have been a simple walk with the match finishing in 3 and a half days. Beatdowns are going to be a common occurrence in the future, esp. when conditions get so heavily loaded in favor of one team and there remains a large mismatch in acclimatization to those conditions.

There is no reason to suggest that future WTC finals will also remain as tighly wound (for only about 2 days worth of cricket mind) just as there is no reason to believe that a 3 test match series cannot produce more exciting cricket. I would much rather take the first three matches of the Ashes 2019 or even the BG 20/21 over this 'final', thanks.

Wow some solid insights there. Looks like India turned up for formality sake and to make up for the numbers.
