Statswatch: If Henry takes one more wicket this innings and concedes fewer than 36 runs, dat test bowling average will move below 50.
Henry's post-lunch spell dragged NZ back into the game but his performance yesterday was rather typical in some ways, as soon as he got unlucky (Lawrence edging twice down to third man for boundaries) the shoulders seemed to drop and he stopped chipping away at the right line and length. With the new ball again, looked like he should be dismissing Wood at any given moment but just didn't happen. Needs a good haul for this game at least to prove he doesn't go missing when conditions are in his favour.

TBH I thought Henry was poor throughout, and I'm not a Henry hater (he is what he is and probably does deserve his spot).

^^ yeah most likely. 3 pacers + 1 spinner & A/R looks like the likely combo for the finals.
Southee Boult KJ should be first three choices

The odds baffle me. Last test match they had England as favorites. This match again they had England favorites by heaps. Good number of English batsmen struggling for runs can't see why there were favorites.
Typical English punditry; still underestimating NZ as a matter of course, and still assuming that your batting is a pushover without Williamson, despite all the evidence to the contrary.

Henry wrecked Indian top order in WC Semi, Any chance he can play ahead of likes of Boult or Wagner as both Southee & KJ are a lock?
That was a great spell for sure, he does come up with those from time to time but only really shown it ODIs. In tests he’s sort of like pre-2012 Tim Southee, can look good with the new ball in the right conditions but can’t seem to get more out of him.

Drop Crawley.

Not sure either Pope or Lawrence at #3 fills me with much confidence, but Crawley has almost literally not scored a run since his 267 vs. Pakistan.

The lanky doofus keeps essaying that same drive and nicking that same ball to the slips.
Someone was suggesting Malan at number 3 yesterday. I think the logic was that he did sort of OK in the last Ashes down under, he made 199 in his one knock at number 3 in the CC last week and he's experienced enough to know his game. Not quite the ringing endorsement I was hoping for to support said recommendation, but those are the times we inhabit. I wouldn't want to play Pope or Lawrence at number 3. Pope needs to up his game massively. I know his CC average is pretty stellar, but lately that's been down to filling his boots against mediocre attacks on a flat Oval wicket. Lawrence has at least made some runs when we needed them yesterday, as he did on occasions in SL and India actually, once they realised it was a good idea not to bat him at number 3.

Seems like quite a gaping hole unless Crawley can redeem himself. As is, his place for the India series might be under threat. Is Root determined to stick to no.4, or would he be prepared to take up the spot in the absence of any clear contenders? IIRC there was a similar problem in 2017 and Vince got the no.3 gig for the entirety of the Ashes.

Rose bowl offers help to spin especially on Day 4/5 so it'll be surprising if they don't go for a spinner.
I think a lot will depend on England's second innings here. If the pitch dries out and Patel puts in a good performance (when it's an expectation rather than a bonus) he'll definitely make it a selection headache.

Kane will probably reason that the 4th specialist seamer is as (or more) likely to get wickets against India as the spinner, and Wagner and CdG together will do the containing job.

I was really hoping for sub-300, but that dream is slipping away at alarming speed.
