*Official* New Zealand in England 2021

Well I had my doubts about our "3 10s and an 11" lower order, but Stone and Wood have done pretty well.

Less encouragingly I suspect they've also put the pitch into perspective too.

Pretty good result for NZ considering the selection and the fact that the pitch looked a very good one. Though the trend of not being able to finish off the lower order continues; need to restrict England to around 300 tomorrow would think.

Honestly I reckon Doull is a professional Gambhirer.

"A pretty even day".

Well admittedly the last two wickets have righted the ledger slightly, but losing 7 poles on a largely benign deck having chosen to bat definitely puts us in the red overall, IMHO.

Lawrence looks like ABdV when he plays some of those shots and moves around the crease. One of those 4s he hit through the offside early on which he finished with a flick was very reminiscent of him.

England’s attack being like 10000 times better than their batting kinda makes it even though.

Yeah, this partnership has balanced the scales somewhat. Wood's done well to hang around. Guy shows fight every time he's out there, with either ball or bat in hand.

The pitch is flat as an absolute biscuit. Without something express or bounce, or alien swing to castle the tail, this was always a chance.

Shows how absolutely hopeless England's batting line-up is (without Stokes, Buttler etc). Against NZ's attack, it's a 400+ deck without any fuss.

Woke up to nearly what I wished for. 250 bowled out and jazz with 5 fer. Looks like the England tail or should I respectfully say lower middle order held off. Looked a bit down and out by lunch but england's middle order doesn't seem to have it in them to build partnerships.

Saw wicket highlights. Barring maybe 2 or 3 rest of them rather gifted wickets. The test ain't over yet, long way to go still. Hopefully we can knock off England for under 300. With the dukes ball no batsman is ever in really. This is going to be an interesting test match. Hard to predict who is ahead and can't tell till we bat. Expecting Anderson and Broad to be on top of their game this test match.

I don't think anyone is arguing Ajaz is our best spinner and should be playing in any match that might be decided by spin. We just generally don't play in conditions where that occurs and he isn't quite as good as the real top quality blokes like Lyon that warrant a spot regardless of conditions.

Rather keep Ajaz than fall back on Santner but I think Santner will be back next game unless Ajaz picks few more wickets. Very much depends on how we bat as well. If we go all right with the bat then jazz maybe picked. Barring Young this is pretty much our batting line up. If we botch it and Ajaz only picks a wicket or two more then can't see him making the line up particularly against India.

I think if Jamieson is playing then Ajaz over Santa makes perfect sense in most conditions. If it's NZ conditions I'd still go with the teams that have the most seamer options and forego the spinner role entirely. I think in the near future we will see Rachin make the team and cover the very small need we have for spin at home.

They can't pick Santner, honestly they can't. India will be absolutely crossing every appendage they have that he plays.

Went to bed at 110 or so for 3, happy enough with 258/7. If nothing else, good to get Boult and Ajaz in the wickets column.

Lawrence extremely edgy and unconvincing for his first 20 runs, but this is now a good innings and looks dangerous at that scoring rate. Need him or the tail out early tomorrow before he has time to get into rhythm again.

Listening to The Analyst podcast summary of the day, One of them (I can't tell difference between the Simons, Mann and Hughes) has a win predictor software. Has England 60%, NZ 22%, Draw 18%.

Although I think winning the toss has a big factor on early percentages.

I have only watched about 1 over of play, I have no opinion.

The odds baffle me. Last test match they had England as favorites. This match again they had England favorites by heaps. Good number of English batsmen struggling for runs can't see why there were favorites.
