2020/21 New Zealand Domestic Season

On that account Firebirds have done quite well in the last couple of years in particular. Troy Johnson, Bhula, Georgeson few names that have come to the fore this season. All these guys didn't have an amazing first or second season but they now are starting to perform consistently. It's a bit of a tough one this, invest in youth and hope for results in future or concentrate on immediate results? With two rounds to go and nothing really to play for I'd hope most centers consider playing future prospects. It has to come at the cost of some established players who would probably want to play every game possible rightly.
This is the time when traditionally, the associations out of the race try a teenage or 2 in the last 2 rounds.

Adam Milne, Neesham, Finn Allen, Jacob Duffy (although he had already had a full T20 run earlier in season IIRC) etc etc. Good, bad or mediocre, this is the time the odd promising young player typically gets thrown into the mix.

That's a great season for Ashok, I wonder how NZ will ruin him.

A few bagfuls for spinners in this late-season round - 4 for Van Woerkom (terrible lbw and three offside slogs, though tbf looks like he developed a lot of pressure), 4 for M Bracewell (ugh), and most importantly G Phillips taking two wickets including his brother's for better figures than Delport and Somerville.
Reacc is for Phillips's 2fa.

Very well spoken. Amazing story his... hope he goes real well at the next level. The bloke that didn't do lots for nearly 2 1/2 years at domestic level goes on to get a gig in everything possible turning everything around within a month or so. That is truly remarkable. Also shows how T20 has in fact changed the way cricket is played and how quickly they get recognized.

Now guys have moving from T20s to test cricket rather than the other way around. It's a trend that can be seen with other countries as well.

I just wish they had picked Ben Sears for the T20s vs Bangladesh. His exploits were no less than Finn Allen's.

Yes they were. Sears had a good Super Smash campaign, finishing with an excellent economy rate and average, but he's well down the wicket taking charts. His efforts were more very good and a bit inconsistent, whereas Allen was great in almost every match. I'm a tad disappointed not to see him given a go, but with only 9 wickets (most of which were taken in two games) I'm not that surprised.

Meanwhile, good news to hear that Ravindra will be back playing for Wellington this weekend. Hope he goes well.
Yeah, from the Stuff article he has gone from looking at surgery and being out most of the year to being ok to play and presumably being back in contention for the 20 man squad to England.

That's awesome news... there were rumors about him being available for the last couple of games but wasn't sure it was hot air.

What's the status with his shoulder then?

Excited to see more Rachin! Would be a great experience he goes to England, even if he doesn't play. I'm still hoping they don't try shoehorn him as a lower order all-rounder, I think an opening bat of his quality is too much to pass up.

It's not clear, but it seems rehab involving a strengthening programme is what they will do without the need for surgery.

Adi Ashok called up to Auckland squad for the next 4-day game. Somerville and Delport also in the squad so he might end up running drinks. I can't believe someone like Delport (33 years old) is keeping Ashok out of the side. I feel like NZC should have the ability to step-in and sort that **** out. Having a once in a generation bowler like Ashok being held back by a guy who is never going to play for NZ is pretty disappointing IMO.

That's good to see... Aces generally are not that keen to give the younger ones a go. Delport has been good over the last two seasons. Somerville can't be dropped. Nothing to lose playing the spinners depending on the deck.

In any case the last two rounds are not that important worth Cantabs already winning they plunket shield.

It will be interesting to see the Wellington XI tomorrow. The squad has 10 bowling options, lol, so I think a specialist seamer (most likely Hartshorn) will miss out. Blundell will keep; he might open, might not.

is he once in a generation though? sodhi was marketed as such and well...
I know what you mean. I've had a decent amount of exposure to both guys and I'll say this: skill-wise, him and Ish at the same age are comparable - Adi is much more accurate though. The big difference for me is the mental side of Adi's game. He's incredibly resilient and self-assured.

Awesome to see Dale Phillips unbeaten on 134 overnight. Back to the wall stuff. Looks like Steve Smith technique working for the Phillips brothers. This vindicates Otago picking up players from elsewhere and giving them ample opportunities to come good.

The sixes vs. fours ratio could continue to look bizarre throughout this Wgtn vs. ND match. Ravindra already with three.
