Yeah. I'm not talking higher honours (although filthy darty T20 stuff, who knows). But has he moved beyond NZFan's "how dare he steal overs form Ravindra" stage yet?

As for higher honours. Yesterday was a bigger FC haul than Santner has ever got, and I'd guess more overs bowled in an innings than Santner has done. And I'm not shitting on Santner, I like him. Santner has made the mistake of making the blackcaps young, banished to pretty much never to play any Plunket Shield again for the crime of being too good in too many formats for NZC's dynamite schedulers to handle. Despite this, Santner is still my first choice currently for a home test 11 in the allrounder spot if we are playing 4 seamers like we did this home season.

But, Wagner won't last forever, and the 4 seamers may not last beyond him, so it's all a bit moot. The specialist spinner's position will open up in next few years even in home conditions, probably closing the Santner and (optimisitic) M Bracewell or Ravindra like gap in the current 11.

I mean. it's only about 20 FC career wickets for Bracewell now. To get a test birth you'd need about 4 or 5 seasons, bowling big overs, overs to win, overs for declaration coz its so flat. Like Ajaz did. Buld up the numbers and the experience. But that would take him to about 34 or 35 years old. Too late. So, darty white ball stuff would be the opening. No off spinner currently anywhere NZ white ball teams (McConchie closest). so definitel opening there.

Bracewell has been batting quite well this season. As much as I want to see Ravindra given chances to develop what is a good quality left arm orthodox that can potentially stand out in international cricket can't fault Bracewell's claim as a spinner for firebirds this year, done well in all formats. Only gripe is not to put himself ahead of other spinners in the side. Give those guys a go equally as well. Younghusband can be used better, he's been bowling quite well this season. This is the reason why bowlers aren't picked as captains generally. They will either bowl themselves way too much or way too less.

Watched on youtube yesterday the firebirds v nd game. Ish just couldn't hit the areas at all. Bowled lots of short balls and even a head high full toss. The bowling arm loop just doesn't look right. There is no full rotation of the bowling arm at all. Doesn't utilize the shoulder rotation or the wrists. His arm is at 12 o'clock... pretty hard to push the ball through and no doubt he's been dishing up short ones consistently. In between he bowls some real good ones... just not consistent. Wonder who's our spin bowling coach? Do we have one?

Canterbury deserved winners this year. By far the best side in plunket shield. Lots of guys performed for them this year. Winners of plunket shield, ford trophy and making the finals of super smash as well... An outstanding season overall.

There's absolutely no reason why Aces can't play him in one of the games remaining. Better act quick otherwise he could end up another Finn Allen.

Oh I'm sure there will be some kind of study commitment at this point. Hard for us to know from the outside if that's a factor in him not playing R7-R8 in his home city.

But yeah if it is simply "our frontline spinner in still right in the mix for getting Tests and Louis Delport's a crafty 33yo who's been awesome for us, 29 wickets @ 22.4 for Auckland", I'm not sure that's really where we'd want their thinking to be. It'd be good for them to work towards a bigger NZ picture.

auckland have always been a net exporter of talent, so they're a tricky side to manage because you don't know whether the guy below a perfectly good player with test talent like somerville is a spud or ajaz patel.

both districts sides have it a little easier in some ways, because they have a lot of depth but two grades (premier club, hawke cup) to sift the best from the rest.

i still rate somerville as a test bowler too. obviously i support ajaz but getting pumped in a one off first test in australia doesn't mean somerville won't do well in nz or continue being a weapon in asia.

i think the smart thing for auckland to do would be telling delport they're a bit worried about having two near retirement spinners so they need to give ashok a run. if delport wants a full fc season again then he'll move of his own accord or work to show he's by far aucklands best option.

On that account Firebirds have done quite well in the last couple of years in particular. Troy Johnson, Bhula, Georgeson few names that have come to the fore this season. All these guys didn't have an amazing first or second season but they now are starting to perform consistently. It's a bit of a tough one this, invest in youth and hope for results in future or concentrate on immediate results? With two rounds to go and nothing really to play for I'd hope most centers consider playing future prospects. It has to come at the cost of some established players who would probably want to play every game possible rightly.

That's a great season for Ashok, I wonder how NZ will ruin him.

A few bagfuls for spinners in this late-season round - 4 for Van Woerkom (terrible lbw and three offside slogs, though tbf looks like he developed a lot of pressure), 4 for M Bracewell (ugh), and most importantly G Phillips taking two wickets including his brother's for better figures than Delport and Somerville.
