Pains me to say this but apart from Rohit, Sandy Smith might be the only current batsman worth a damn on these sort of wickets. The pitch might be unpredictable, as everyone's pointing out, but I genuinely feel modern batsmen are hopeless at reading balls out the hand or off the pitch, and generally premeditate their shots with hard hands. Hardly any good at skipping down the wicket either. Smith checks all those boxes and then some.

I wonder if Emburey and Edmonds might have in the 80s somewhere on the SC?
I'd be surprised if our spinners opened in the 1980s, not least because E&E never toured the SC together. But I was wrong about 1936/37 and also the first test in 1950/51; our quicker bowlers opened in both cases.

EDIT
No, it didn't happen in the 1980s. Probably pre-WW1.

After a good fight England set up a tricky 50 runs to get in a slightly spinning pitch for the to be world test champions, India. My prediction is in track. India will win by 9 wickets if you remember some of my stellar posts.

Axar and Ashwin will do well in Australia, New Zealand, England and South Africa too. Quality bowlers who did well in a flat track.

The posts in here saying 'is the pitch really that bad?' have to be a pisstake
My post was prompted by the memory of worse pitches than this in the SC, and by having just witnessed some pretty shoddy batting. But yes, it's probably also a bad pitch for batting on.
