2020/21 New Zealand Domestic Season

What’s another 3 t20s vs Bangers going to tell us about Guptill that we don’t already know? I’d say it would actually be worth investing in Allen in case Guptill’s abysmal form continues in the World Cup as well, lest we end up with another Munro situation, totally out of form with no back up plan ... but I don’t know how fair it is to send Allen straight onto that stage in foreign conditions. Not very I guess.
It's not about learning something about Gup, it's about giving him more opportunities to find his touch again. He's just timing it abysmally, to me it seems like he's in the opposite of flow - just over-thinking and over-willing everything he's doing. Let him get back in that top environment, talk to Kane, be around those guys and find his game again. I don't think you chuck away someone like Gup that quickly unless the stuff below is cherry ripe and ready (which Allen is not).

I'd disagree there's no back-up plan as well, Munro for a start. Phillips, Conway, all squad members capable of opening.

the auckland 12 listed on cricinfo looks really light on batting. i count 6 batting options, several of whom can bowl. jamieson can hit it a long way but surely they're not tempting fate with him at #7?

They had him due to bat 7 in their last game too. They only lost four wickets so he didn't actually bat but it was the same balance. Only losing four wickets but still losing the game doesn't really scream "stack the batting" as a response either, tbf.

Just ducked in to check and Otago already 4 down. Clash of the teams the just doesn't know how to win. Good opportunity for Rippon lots of overs to come.

Yeah good jinxing. Can rely on Otago batting badly no matter what Auckland set anyway.

In saying that, these two teams will be joint wooden spooners after Auckland win today. Auckland really should have done better.

auckland were always in trouble this season with ferguson injured, munro overseas, mcclenaghan and allen moving and guptill losing all touch.

munro
allen
guptill
phillips
chapman
solia
horne
jamieson
somerville
mcclenaghan
ferguson

would have been tournament favourites imo. the talent is there, they just can't hold onto it. they need to export ferns and ter braak not allen and mcclenaghan. the motivational speaker coach looks like a right royal dunce right now.

Enjoyed reading through the discussions on the Wellington v CD game and how much to accelerate Sears + Ravindra + Allen into the NZ side. Firmly in the Bahnz n co camp i.e. NZ selectors should largely hold off for another season, possibly barring some random T20I for Sears or Allen for a taste. Tbh I think the selectors have done a reasonable job giving fringe players a little exposure though T20Is over recent years - this should continue.

But for the most part, there are many worthy players ahead of them both in the NZ sides and on the fringes - I'm not talking numpties who are there by virtue only of longevity either - e.g. Allen is competing in T20 or ODI cricket against young-ish fringe players like Phillips, Seifert, Conway, Chapman, who have all done plenty to deserve it too.

A bit different for Ravindra as a test match opening option where there's always a shortage - to take that position he's competing against himself, needs a lot of FC runs.

You've gotta say that Otago have overperformed just by winning a couple of games. Especially with the Blackcaps playing in most of the competition they've looked miiiiiiles below the other teams in bowling, batting and fielding.

Guptill's terrible form has hurt them a lot. Still should have done better imo - a couple of newer players like W O'Donnell and Ter Braak have actually contributed quite well, but most of the mid-tier players in the side have been a bit sub-par.

I've missed plenty of games but Otago's bowling looks ok on paper.

The batting isn't but they did beat Auckland earlier in the season on the back of 72 from Llew Johnson - where was he today?
The other game they won was against an ND side that was without almost all its Black Caps. Seifert scored 74, the rest collapsed and Otago chased it, just.

Edit: Johnson has played 9 T20s for 136 runs with a high of 72, so nothing apart from that one score. Just left out, I guess.

Phillips averaging <20 really hurt them too. Never looked out of nick and scored freely but just got out cheaply way too many times for a team with a horribly out of form Guptill and a soft underbelly.

Ah I couldn't remember Phillips scoring many runs but didn't go to the trouble of checking. That makes sense thanks.
