And I’m not having a go at ACC, it has a place and I’m a gigantic Jeremy Wells fan. Test cricket on the host broadcaster is not that place

nah it’s definitely also the stuff I said which is quite distinct from the full-on bro culture of the ACC, but you probably have to see the guy across different social media channels (and his Rugby Onion commentary) to get the full vibe

The beauty of Watling is that yeah he’s a nuggety keeper who bats 7 and is strong off the back foot, but really, in terms of mentality and technique, he’s more like a slightly below-par opener batting at 7. No glaring technical or mental issues to exploit which must make him so demoralising to bowl to. Actually struggling to think of someone comparable.

Again, I’m exposed to them more through social media than the actual commentary, and to me that’s very ‘contemporary bro’ or ‘I’m-kinda-smart-bro’. That’s my point though, maybe I’m talking about people who don’t know I’m talking about them.

And I’m pretty sure Sumo is literally an ACC-affiliate? But his persona is actually more ‘PC’ and imo less bro than them. But that’s individual perception I guess. I get how he could be seen as more bro.

Sorry guys but I reckon many, if not most of us get plenty of sense of success and accomplishment and camaraderie outside of hitting a red ball around a field. The reason you don't might have something to do with the fact that you're not actually doing anything meaningful after your sporting career. You made decent money, both of you. Plenty of opportunity to retrain in a field that would bring loads of accomplishment and camaraderie.

Kinda sad, but probably quite a common sentiment amongst former top sports people. No doubt they both still experience camaraderie and accomplishment post-cricket but it's going to be different.

Not-that-short version - there is a weird and very distinctive subculture of (with apologies for using
the ‘w’ word) ‘woke boofhead’ culture in NZ sport twitter. Sort of like a whole lot of PC Principal types
from South Park. Basically white guys in their 30s and 40s who embody every toxic masculine archetype but disguise it by trotting out the ‘right’ opinions all the time.

I know some of these guys irl, hyper-aggressive narcissist types, but they say women’s cricket is good on twitter so that makes it ok...

‘Sumo’ is like the patron saint of these guys. Smug know-nothing ****wit but he pronounces names correctly and tweets about feminism so he must be a good bloke.

I am wondering if I get so wound up by Stevenson because there is no-one in the team itself to wind me up? I mean, there has always been someone underperforming who I am annoyed at. But now Southee has suddenly become good with a white ball in hand, all I have left is a **** commentator who constantly misreads the action and talks all the time without actually having anything to say.
