The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Red

Red Hill's side has a lot of holes in it, for me, but we have had this argument to death here and he is entitled to his best XI. Fair to say, not many will share his views though.
How on earth does my side have "a lot of holes in it"? Seriously curious about your reply.

Do we really have to go through all this again? I'll fast track it.

RH: "You're biased"

I'm in no way suggesting he's biased. I'm curious as to why he'd denigrate my selected side by saying it has "a lot of holes in it".

I get the Symonds thing (some wont think he's deserving, but to me he's the greatest ground fielder I've seen, plus a destructive batsman and a decent bowler- legit perfect ODI package". I rate fielding so highly that it bothers me I can't squeeze Punter in any more. But I know we've done the Symonds thing to death.

I'm curious as to where he sees "lots of holes". Because even if you wont accept Symonds, the other ten are out and out ATGs, undisputed. Aren't they?

Important to keep in mind that Red Hill has an irrational dislike of Bevan for some reason
Not irrational at all. He was a decent ODI batsman but there are at least ten guys I haven't selected in my XI that I'd choose before Bevan. Probably more. He's massively overrated in the true sense of the word.

I don't know what you think you're going to get out of him but you can start by re-reading the last page.

It has to be related to Symonds instead of a Dhoni/Bevan type player I guess. So I imagine one hole. Or maybe he doesn't rate Gilchrist as much as some

but yeah I like that side. As long as Symonds isn't bowling 10 it's fine. His fielding was phenomenal(such an underrated part of cricket - you realise this when you play with bad fielders) and of course he averaged 40 and struck at 92 so he can certainly provide a lot with the bat.

Starc is actually quite fit for a fast bowler these days, relatively speaking. Missed more games through resting than injury. You might be confusing him with someone else.
he’s probably fit because he’s rested that often though.

just shows up to the WC, takes poles then barely plays any more. it’s a perfect arrangement.

Whatever it takes!!!
Keeping aside the usual dumb posts from TJB, @Red Hill, I meant your side has a lot of holes as far as ATG sides go. Not from the perspective of taking on any random ODI XI.

For starters, Gilchrist was way too flaky to be considered a reliable opener. That middle order is exactly what I will have but your 6 and 7 are again flaky at best. When 3 of the top 7 are flaky, I do consider it a "lot" of holes for an ATG side. And you have 3 #11s which is another factor. And as far as bowling goes, I still think there can be better bowling options than Symonds as the 2nd spinner which will be a hole in an ATG setting.

Of course, when I say "a lot " of holes, I am speaking relatively and I think my side addresses the gaps far better. Plus the captain from my side will easily be a better one than from yours too. Will need a good one to keep all those egos from combusting and the guy I would have captaining my side knows a thing or two about handling sides with loads of egos and big names.

Leaving out both Dhoni and Bevan definitely looks like a hole to me. You are not picking the very best for an important role. It would be like not picking both Akram and Garner (yorkers at death specialists). You may pick Hadlee and Pollock and it will be great team but it will feel like it doesn't represent peak awesomeness.

The fact is that the closest we've ever gotten to an ATG XI playing together was the 2007 world cup Australian side. The number 6 and 7 barely got a hit all tournament. They're literally the last valuable spots in any side.

Gilchrist
Hayden
Ponting
Symonds
Watson
Clarke
Hussey
Hogg
Bracken
Tait
McGrath

And they were a side that was up against one of the best sides Sri Lanka has ever fielded with 1 ATG spinner, 2 ATVG pace bowlers and an all rounder who is in contention for the AT world XI. And the Australian number 7 did not bat. Australia's numbers 5 and 6 faced a grand total of 9 balls between them.

Honestly if you have Viv, de Villiers and Tendulkar in your side you should probably play a bowler at 7 and run with 5 front line options.

here is an AT ODI XI made up of players who are usually ignored in these conversations, with no current player in it

RJ Hadlee
DK Lillee

Sri Lanka have overachieved massively in World Cups haven't they? At least up until 2015

1996 - win
2003 - semi
2007 - final
2011 - final

not bad for a small Island

absolutely. considering a country on another small island, england, won their first championship in 2019, despite inventing the game.
