Was Omar really that bad? He didn't disgrace himself when he played during the strike, possibly unlucky not to play more tests.
Travis Dowlin did well enough during the strike to actually be retained after the strike, too. He probably would've got an even longer run if the rest of the team didn't resent him for being a scab.

Yes I remember Dowlin playing after the strike - Roach got to stay on as well. Omar plays in Melbourne now, I've seen him play against my club side hence why I asked about him.

I think most of them actually were rewarded for their service by being given token ODIs for match payments etc, but Dowlin is the only one I can remember who was clearly only in the frame due to the strike and yet stuck around afterwards due to his performances during the strike. Sammy and Roach both played during the strike but weren't exactly random squad fillers. There was genuinely a feeling at the time that Dowlin could offer something a full strength.

Phillips did alright when he played but wasn't sighted afterwards, mainly due to the fact that he never scored any runs in domestic cricket. Like I think he was literally averaging sub 25. This was peak "domestic pitches are mindfields" era so maybe that had something to do with it, but being not-terrible wasn't enough to propel him, particularly given he was a non-starter even domestically in the 50 over format they more or less used to reward these people.

What's the outlook for rain today? As much as it would be cruel for England, who now appear the vastly superior unit, it is England, and I would love to see them not earn a win. Ideally Broad gets to take 10 wickets for the match, before rain washes the rest of it out. I love Broad. I don't know why he gets so much hate at times.

This whole time I thought Dowrich and Dowlin were the same guy. Thought he'd been around for while but used to bat higher and not be as good a keeper.

There might be a few showers but definitely not enough to wipe out the day. Met office reckons rain around 12-1 which will probably just mean an early lunch.

county cricket is a good experience for foreign batsmen. id never pick a bowler off it though unless i wanted to confirm fitness or get them duke experience.

Whatever it takes!!!
I would actually county cricket is a good experience for most overseas professionals. But yeah, its tough to guess the standard of the local players based ONLY on county cricket, although, TBF, that would be true of most counties, if not all and which is why the A team set up is really the most important part of any country's cricket culture.

There was this random bloke who batted 3 in the 1999 ATG series Vs Australia for Windies. I don't remember his name but he looked like he could genuinely develop into a good test batsman but I have no idea if he even ever played after that. Not looking out of place against THAT Aussie attack was something.

Remember watching Donovan Pagon bat when he got about 35 I think on an absolute featherbed but thought he was destined for bigger things, he was like a young Carl Hooper.......I was wrong.

Remember Pagon as well. He played during another, slightly less serious player strike and the Windies unexpectedly outplayed South Africa, but he was dropped when Sarwan and the others came back.

Briefly argued with Mr Mxyptlk (Liam) on here about whether they should've kept him on instead of Ryan Hinds.

Yes that?s right. I felt slightly aggrieved he wasn?t retained, just looked at his overall record and think he averaged 30 in first-class cricket so maybe they had a point.

I think there will be one session of stodgy resistance - a wicket falling right towards the end, then a couple of smaller defiant partnerships, ending with England wrapping it up comfortably in the beginning of the final session.

Pagon was yet another batsman who would hit the shot of the day, perhaps play the cameo of they day, but never play the innings of the day. We had too many of those unfortunately.

The showers aren't forecast to last long so I guess the WI need to pray for drainage problems etc.
