Yeah, I thought the Blaze might be disadvantaged by the game being shortened but it looks like they are heading for a comfortable win after dominating the round robin.

About a decade ago he was a brief fixture.

Interesting to see the three men behind square for the short ball outside off against Conway. Didn’t seem to work since he threaded the needle anyway.

I always feel old when I see Shaun Haig out there umpiring. I played against him in his Dunedin senior club debut for Taieri when he was just 16. He's since had a (sporadic) career for Otago, taken up umpiring and is now experienced enough and rated highly enough to do the Super Smash final.

Yep, old. :(

That NZ XI game got surprisingly close. Great innings by Boyle and Allen in particular.

Just purchased some Firebirds merchandise and a spud spiral.

deserved win for welly. van beek had a great all round game. smoked some crucial sixes, took 3 wickets and made two awesome outfield catches.

Was there any reason mentioned by the commentators for Auckland’s batting? Just a slowish pitch and good bowling I assume? Thought they’d cruise when Guptill smoked a few in the first over, but nobody really looked likely at all after that.

Anyway, great result, van Beek’s two outfield catches in one over were magic. Great day at the Basin!

I went to teacher’s college with him ... definitely sad to think someone my age has already hung up the boots and moved into professional sporting career #2!

Watched it on telly, should have gone. Saw it was up and down weather and decided against it.

No mention of slowness of pitch, pretty much everyone mentioned how good firebirds bowlers are. In fact they thought the pitch was very good with bounce and carry. I can't dispute that. Couple of queries about Guppy's option to paddle which is something they hadn't seen him do. Fair bit of mention about Conway, Newton, Bennett, Jimmy and Ravindra pretty much.

The difference I think is the number of runs Firebirds scored in the powerplay. They lost couple of wickets yes but those two that got out got some quick runs allowing Conway to drop anchor. I think this is something Firebirds have thought out and try to execute. They haven't all the time but generally they have had good runs in the powerplay. Aces meanwhile tried to play patient game and I'm guessing they would have liked to target someone like Younghusband that hasn't bowled all that much but Firebirds didn't even use him. Was it a good tactic? Not sure but they struck with 5 bowlers and I can't fault a single bowler. They all bowled extremely well. Besides the top 4 aces batters are as good as they come.

Watching at the ground I was surprised O'Donnell was given out. DRS should be available for these games. Well played to the Firebirds, an excellent campaign and strong late run by Auckland to get to the final.

Was nice to see the players signing autographs afterwards. Somers Somerville was accepting fist pumps from kids as he walked out to bat too.

How has Finn Allen not landed a gig somewhere in New Zealand. I’d be telling Auckland play me or let me go because I’m sure there are 3-4 provinces that would play him.

To be fair that big screen had all the definition of Jesse Ryder’s eyesight after a night on the turps. Bit it definitely didn’t look out on the screen.

Yeah Guptill’s lap shots were very puzzling, definitely not his game, but he did look very frustrated out there.

Picked up on the decision not to bowl Younghusband as well, good choice in the circumstances after the last match. Ravindra did really well to bowl his four.

Had to feel for Horne getting demoted to below McClennaghan and then getting out caught on the boundary after hitting his first ball for 6!
