Caterbury were the best and Auckland the last. Wellington came 3rd, ND 2nd, Otago 4th and CD 5th.
Under 17s brings very good memory.
Some years ago the under 17 tourney was played in Wellington. I was interested in couple of kids so wandered over to Karori to watch. Saw other guys such as Bruce Edgar (he was going to take over Wellington that year from memory or maybe the next year), NZC cricket folks etc Was mighty impressed by an Otago opening bowler that was nipping the ball all over the place, he was Nathan Smith. Saw another kid that was going ballistic in CD Colours, that was Leopard. There was this huge kid that towered all other kids around and was hitting the ball a long way. That was Josh Clarkson. I was told CD was a very strong side.
At a distance I saw few guys gathered and all keenness watching Wellington bat. While I wandered over I saw this kid no more than 5.2 or 5.3 hit a straight drive right off the screws and the ball raced away splitting mid off and mid on. I thought geez that's some shot for a 16 year old. As I got closer to the blokes and inquired about the dude I was told he's about 13 years old and opening the batting. I'm sure any of you can guess who that was, it was Rachin Ravindra. As I hung around for a while he scored quickly and his balance at the crease was unbelievable. I couldn't believe a kid as young as that can bat that well. Then and there I was a fan. I have followed him since
He didn't score all that many runs but it was evident this was a special talent.
Ended up going to the entire tourney and watching the NZC stars of future. Finn Allen, Felix Murray, Ben Sears etc played then and it was great to watch them then. Glad to see so many young kids from that bunch have carried on to become professional cricketers.
Oh for the record the blokes that were scoring lots of runs and taking plenty of wickets in fact became unknowns over the years. From then on I stopped rating the runs and wickets at that age.
Check the twitter out, mentioned by one of the twitter user... this is around the time when Martin Crowe predicted this kid Ravindra is a star in the making. We'll only know if he was way off mark or right on the cue in some years time.
