Yeah, just seeing a replay on the videoscorecard it even seemed a half hearted appeal by the keeper.

Horne has looked explosive the few times I have seen him so I was also surprised he came in below Mitch Mc.

Wellington did really well through Bracewell and Van Beek to get 167 after Neesham went.

@Howsie,

Some of those Finn Allen boundaries certainly have a touch of class about them. ND should try to entice him down their way.

allen should definitely be playing. the likes of robbie o'donnell average 30 in fc cricket after 45 games and they've gone and made him skipper. there are things to like about o'donnell but in the end low 30s averages don't cut it if you want to win titles. chapman is in the same boat, but only has 20 odd games.

if they keep this up all their good players will leave again like raval, neesham and sodhi did.

Auckland is a strange set up. They think they're amazing and sit out players like Allen, Anderson but their back up players aren't good enough. Wellington was like this too but seems they've changed. Allen runs against England and India this season. What more proof are they after? Strangely they debuted him in an all important semi finals 3 years ago when he was 17 I think in a T20. 3 years on they don't play him. Surely he's not gone worse.

NZC should do what they did with Rachin, play him for NZ A and Auckland will have no choice but to play him.

What's the difference between Allen and Rachin really. Both are promising and enterprising. Both are quite aggressive, Rachin probably is the best young player of pace bowling in the country meanwhile Finn probably the best player of spin.

Yes they have always really rated how well Robbie O'Donnell talks about the game (fortunately he's not the actual son of the coach here now). Guptill and Munro being available for the whole campaign was obviously another pretty unusual and one-off factor to it. I think they see Allen as a pretty airheaded bimbo top-order ballstriker in the making, and they'll give this a run next season when their internationals are absent. They gave Allen just the one unsuccessful run at No. 6 against Hobart, right before this tourney began.

Tbf, Allen was pretty awful last season in a Plunket Shield tournament that was significantly weakened by the absence of both NZ and NZA players. But that's not an excuse to just give up on a player. Iirc, KW scored 2 runs across 2 innings in his FC debut, and was thoroughly bullied by the gentle pace of Andre Adams. Came back a year later and averaged 50+.

andre bullied everyone tbf

but yeah they opened with him in list A and maybe fc? and i think he's always been a middle order player. aucklands middle order isn't otago bad but it's not good, they should pick him. o'donnell probably still makes the team at #4 or #5 with chapman missing out.

Didn't realize he's had 8 first class games and about 8 List A games already. He debuted in T20s in 2017. That's a long time ago. Perhaps he's matured a bit late. Now is the time for him to get a decent go. There's only like 2 months left in the season. He's not going to improve much playing club cricket.

The gentle pace you cite averaged nine with the ball that year with over 50 wickets. NINE.

Still one of my most fond first class watching memories, Kane on debut batting in the near dark v a rampant Andre, then Andre giving a Marshall a serve at the other end for the perceived weakness of exposing a debutant to the light at the end of the day.

the test careers of wagner and especially adams clone philander do make wonder whether we missed a trick giving the angry medium pacer 1 test (in which he took 6fer). he was actually reasonably sharp in his youth.

he had "attitude" problems, which basically means you'll be condemned to the scrap heap for not being a sheep

Andre Adams in retrospect seems like one of those guys who does the macho one of da boyz thing in his early-mid twenties, but underlying that is smart and excels once the professionalism & inner drive kicks in. Seems to be respected as a bowling coach now. Dion Nash another.

Every time Andre Adams name comes up I only remember his bouncer that bounced twice before it reached the other end. From memory was against Aussies in the world cup and the ball was hit over long on for a six. Reminiscent of milo cricket when you're 6 or 7 years old. Double bounce and you smack it.

When Adams was regularly in the ODI team he was a reasonably pacey and moderately erratic bowler, a bit of a white ball specialist, and he could also biff 6s. At least that was his reputation and that's what he showed at international level.

Maybe he was always a different animal in red ball cricket, but my understanding was that Adams-as- Philander clone didn't really emerge until he was in his 30s. This fits the overall narrative of his career, as he was a late bloomer at every level and so probably didn't figure his game out until later too.

It's always going to be tough for a tried and discarded player to convince the selectors to give him another go as an entirely different style of player at an advanced age.

Semi-true, but if you watch the highlights of that test he did play vs England in 02, he’s really not that far off.

He even took wickets with it!

I distinctly remember the first time I saw him play, which was a tri-series match (the one where Bond went mental in his first tour), and he ran out Chris Harris on 3rd last ball of the match which was criticised as Harris was the seasoned pro and Adams was this newbie who should've let Harris finish the innings, and sacrifice himself for the greater goos. He then proceeded to smoke the last two balls for a 6 and a 4.

What happened to not get another Test after that?

Great memories of that tour, living on forever with the Nathan Astle 222 DVD. The greatest of which was Doug Cowie giving Flintoff out caught behind at Eden Park. Adams hardly appealed, and even 15 cans in on the Terraces I knew it was nowhere near
