Yeah he was. Probably still would be if you told him he had to bowl flat out for a spell for his life. Injuries ftl.
I can't say I've ever seen any early Small footage, so I don't know quite what he was like at his best, but I can certainly see why he was so injury prone.

Unfortunate really, but he's far from alone in that respect. As you probably well know by now, I have a lot of time for tearaway quicks who look brilliant but can't stay fit

When are they announcing the team for the T20 vs India? I'm hoping there is at least one from Firebirds if not two named in the side. I think Hamish Bennett deserves selection and I reckon Jimmy making the team is a foregone conclusion. Hamish Bennett and Ollie Newton have been the best new ball bowling pair this year in super smash.

small looked so good in under 19s. he opened the bowling with wheeler for nz and was in the low to mid 140s as a 17 year old. not milne quick but bowls a better length and appears to bowl the heavy ball meme.

matt henry another who just missed an under 19 wc due to his age iirc. debuted in fc very young and began taking wickets immediately.

How does Neesham miss out, seriously.

Staggered that Bennett finally gets a go after about 3 or 4 years of deserving it ... there must be a maximum one-Wellington player cap in all Blackcaps sides.

Yeah is there any 'don't give them games with real intensity in an injury return' factor here, or is it that Mitchell's always struggled with spin, so they want to pit his current hot form against India.

How in the world is Glenn Phillips not in the 20/20 squad?

Great to see Josh Clarkson in that NZ A team too......

Great to see both Hamish Bennett (NZ) and Ollie Newton (NZ A) have been selected. Both deserved a selection.

I can't quite understand how Jimmy Neesham missed out. Often he misses out for no reason. He's at his best form in life and he consistently misses out. He should be playing all formats. I think there must be some conspiracy against him otherwise I can't see how he misses out.

I can't make sense of some of these selections. They have gone with 5 spinners for the NZ A side. TAstle, McConchie, Ajaz, Ravindra and Chapman. This in New Zealand conditions. Sounds like they are taking a team to sub continent. The problem is because Astle and Ajaz will play the rest of them won't get a look in.

Why are they persisting with Munro and Guptill for opening? Why not create some competition with adding of Rutherford? How come Rutherford is not in the NZ A side either?

Also what is this matches 1-3 and 4-5 selections. Are they that unsure?

Tom Bruce now is the captain, he wasn't even in the NZ or NZ A squad last year this time. I don't really know how much more he has done since and he's quite a good player but just the inconsistency in selections written all over this.

Why not Glenn Phillips? Oh that's because they have Seifert I'm guessing.

Anyways selections won't necessarily please everyone all the time but I'd hope they had some consistency. Non selection of Jimmy Neesham is a huge disappointment. The bloke sounds like a good bloke, playing his best cricket and he is consistently ignored. For him to get in he needs to do extra ordinary where as other players just walk in despite inconsistent performance. Someone please take away the power of selection from the coach and the captain.

Josh Clarkson isn't in the NZ A side. Would have loved to see Nathan Smith in the squad but looks like the lad is injured. I think Clarkson is quite some distance from the NZ A side.

Yes of course he knows Clarkson didn't make it. You're best to keep an eye out for any sarcastic trailing off dots with habitually sour internet dissenters.

Howsie does enjoy the long ball (chicks dig the long ball). Tends to highly rate its importance as this kind of knuckle-dragger's takedown of the opposition's psyche. This means he'll disregard the less than adroit play he sees from Clarkson against those Chapman overs, for instance. Didn't really learn his lesson on this from Corey Anderson.

You would hope he isn’t given his List A numbers. Given how inept Larsen and Stead are though, and seeing as they refuse to select anyone who isn’t at least 45 years old it wouldn’t be surprising.

Bit sad really that old internet poster Howsie seems to be in the know more than our two national selectors when it comes to Clarkson and his likely future over the ditch. Ah well maybe we can pinch him back when he’s 35....

Forget NZ A, the CD needs to play him consistently through the summer. He'll get his chances in future no doubt. Wish he was bowling. Looks like he's given up on bowling entirely and to purely make it as a batsman is going to take some effort from this year.

Here's my attempt to put that List A NZA team into a batting order, in a sensible NZ conditions format of 3 seamers, 1 spinner, plus allrounders (rather than playing both higher profile players Patel and Astle in same team at the expense of balance, thus reducing other specialists opportunities)

1 George Worker
2 Glenn Phillips
3 Rachin Ravindra
4 Tom Bruce (c)
5 Jimmy Neesham
6 Mark Chapman / Cole McConchie
7 Tom Blundell (wk)
8 Todd Astle / Ajaz Patel
9 Kyle Jamieson
10 Jacob Duffy
11 Ollie Newton

Only a 3 match series, though, and would expect everyone to get a minimum of 2 games each.

So would expect a:
Astle / Patel / McConchie split
and
Neesham / Chapman / McConchie / Worker split

I am interested in how Ollie Newton goes. He's been impressive last 2 years. I could foresee reasonable immediate international white-ball success with his into the pitch bowling.

Damning indictment on our under-28 seamers, though.

The plus side is that across the T20 team and the NZ A squad. It seems like they're now getting MOST of the right people.

Is there anything preventing Conway from representing NZA? I know he can't play for NZ proper until October or Novemberish but the earlier we can get him to the setup, the better.

Didn't we establish that qualifying players like Conway/Foxcroft can play for A sides?

Edit: Athlai beat me to it.
