The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

They used to come out here every two years in the 80s, and Viv used to win player of the year just by turning up. Was hilarious. Even when they just came out for one dayers.

Must have built a new six car garage for all the prizes. Was an arrogant ****er and, quite frankly, had absolutely every right to be lol
He won the Player of the Series award for the 1986-7 WSC (when WI came bottom of the group), and Border and Gatting both reckoned the voting was a farce.

To be fair, Viv didn't have a bad series, but Steve Waugh would probably have been a better choice.

Batsmen averaging 45+ in ODIs
Minimum : 50 ODIs

1980s : 6

1990s : 2

2000s : 9

2010s : 20
Can you see why Bevan averaging 60 in an era where only one other player averaged 45+ might just lead some to believe that he's a pretty damned special player?

Bevan is a Top 10 ODI batsman IMO.

Mate, I preferred Dhoni over Bevan for few reasons. The most important reason was I needed a wicket Keeper. Secondly, the number 6 batsman will have less balls to face and Dhoni is more likely to accelerate the run rate than Bevan IMO.

We had an issue with Rohit or Gilchrist.

The only notable change from their career figures is that Richards's average in matches where Garner was playing goes up to 57.

Don’t really have a problem with Viv-Garner being the best duo.

Just pointed out Kohli-Bumrah have been quite good too. Especially Kohli in the last 4 years.

You just have to accept that you'll get hit when facing fast bowlers. Only way you'll body will not freeze up and actually be in a position to react in my opinion.

If cricket didn’t have helmets or protective equipment in the 90s, Donald and Ambrose would have legit ended careers of many batsmen.

He was a special player. Nobody is disputing that. Only when we extrapolate it and say x is greater than y by z percentage because x averaged a in one era whereas y averaged only b in another era, it is opening up a debate.

Choosing Bevan as a finisher over Dhoni would mean I have to sacrifice Rohit or Greenidge for Gilchrist.

Choosing Dhoni over Bevan would allow me
a) Great ODI Captain

b) Dhoni can accelerate and hit big runs than Bevan

c) Allow me a better opener, Rohit or Greenidge over Gilchrist

Is Thisara Perera very good at T20s? Can't say I've ever noticed. I'd take Pollard or even better, Andre Russell over him.

Sunil Narine needs to be in there as well. Action concerns aside, guy is virtually unhittable in T20s. Also, how does AB de Villiers not make an AT T20 side?

Yep.. should be the keeper batsman finisher ahead of Dhoni.

Although, gotta say Buttler s making an absolute play for that role too.

Then why is Bumrah in there?
Because he's a bowler with insane cross format stats and has that X-factor. Azam averages 50 sure but is kinda slow for a batsman of his talent at the moment. Maybe in a year or two, he'd be the first name on the sheet but I don't think I'll choose him for now. But he's definitely going to push someone out when he hits his peak.

Actually I have changed my mind about Rohit. You guys were right and I didn't think about it enough. Maybe kicking Rohit off and bring in Rahul in his stead would be better. And if we make him keep wickets, we could get rid of Dhoni and bring in Russell.

Not choosing Abdv because he did nothing in international T20s.

1. Lokesh Rahul +
2. Chris Gayle
3. Virat Kohli
4. Eoin Morgan
5. Glenn Maxwell
6. Andre Russell
7. Thisara Perera
8. Mitchell Starc
9. Rashid Khan
10. Lasith Malinga
11. Jasprit Bumrah

Agree. Its like Gilchrist and how his test match greatness is often relayed to ODIs where he was not great.
Give some comprehensive reasons why you think Gilchrist wasn't great at ODIs. Considering he's been selected in many AT ODI XIs in many different spheres.

If your reasoning is "he only averaged 35", then don't bother.

Cricketer Of The Year
Virat Kohli and Jaspit Bumrah

2016-Present

Kohli has scored 4689 runs in 74 matches at an average of 84 and hit 20 centuries.

Bumrah has taken 103 wickets at an average of 21 and SR of 29 in 58 matches.
That's a good one. While I agree Viv-Garner wins by a long long distance, below are few other batsmen-bowler combinations I liked to watch.

Jayasuriya-Murali
Ponting-Mcgrath
Anwar-Saqlain

These guys kept the interest alive in both innings on what they will be doing. Sad that Tendulkar or Lara and to an extent, ABD didn't have a great/fearsome ODI bowler who could complement them and win matches on their own.
