Will Young starts his comeback from surgery this weekend turning out for Taranaki in the Furlong Cup.
Horowhenua-Kapiti actually won on the first innings despite the presence of Young and Bruce, they'd be over the moon with that. No Liam Pinfold to bowl his outswingers and nick out the stars there, only Jamie Pinfold behind the stumps. Liam was in this team and doing alright a couple of weeks back.

O'Rourke: Auckland (although, too old for U19 world cup)
August 2001 I have for O'Rourke btw, so if that's accurate, he is in contention.

Did anyone see this Neil Broom shot from Ford Trophy last week?

https://www.nzc.nz/match-reports/round-5-ford-trophy-on-bert-sutcliffe-oval
I would have seen it if the Otago Volts Twitter account hadn't blocked me for a tweet I made last year along the lines of "could the last one out from the Otago Volts please turn the lights off?" when players were seemingly leaving every week.

I mean, is it even legal to ban the former Voltman from the Otago Volts account? I say no.

I'm such a sucker for the front-on camera. I hadn't particularly noticed Hancock from any of the previous 4 matches, then today a sharp wicket-filled spell towards the camera and I'm all interested.

Lots of centuries so far in the U19s, 8 of them, but only (edit) 3 of them from any players who were in the NZ U19s squads for the recent series.

Might be some tough selecting. Although probably half of them are from various openers I suppose.

under 19 sides must be so hard to select for.

the players have very little body of work behind them, the difference in development between a 16 year old and 18 year old can be huge and the players are just so much more raw.

with the adults if you put 60-70+ blokes in a 10 round season you're going to find 12-13 stand outs you can be fairly confident are your best. not so with under 19s.

Also, on this.

A few of the players, who had been the NZ U19 squads, have missed first part of the tournament as it coincided with the GIllette Cup.

I assume they wouldn't be 'punished' for that, and they are all in Chch as well anyway. So selectors could watch.

Makes the selecting even harder.

I guess those two tournaments clash as the ICC tournament is in southern hemisphere in January, so squeezing in cricket between end of school year and time when U19s are selected.

I think they would have already picked 12 out of 15 players given we have had series' vs the Aussies and the Bangladesh. 2 or 3 likely will be newbies IMO.

Yes, Mariu and Frew played in the Gillette Cup winning St Andrews side and played for Canterbury Under 19 yesterday.

Yes I'll try to lay it all out now, seeing this squad will probably be put out hot on the heels of the tourney's conclusion. I'll do the batting and wicket-keeping today.

Batting locks:

Lellman (ton vs. Bangladesh, NZ U19 ave 89.7)
Zohrab (ton vs. Bangladesh, having success with his part-time off-cutters)
Mariu (ton vs. Australia)
White
Tashkoff

Capped, not certainties:

Pomare † (NZ U19 record: 93 @ 18.6, current domestic tourney before today: 86 @ 28.7, SR: 100) - better player to the eye than his early stats suggest. Good numbers in U17 tourneys.
Sunde † (NZ U19 record: 55 @ 27.5, current domestic tourney before today: 119 @ 119, SR: 102)
Frew (NZ U19 record: 10 @ 3.3, Gillette Cup 234 @ 58.5, SR: 87)
Clark (NZ U19 record: 132 @ 18.9, current domestic tourney before today: 226 @ 56.5, SR: 88)
Ansell (NZ U19 record: 44 @ 22, current domestic tourney before today: 156 @ 39, SR: 80) - top runscorer in back-to-back U17 tourneys, five tons overall in his U17/U19 tourneys.
McKenzie (NZ U19 record: 96 @ 16, current domestic tourney before today: 64 @ 16, SR: 70)
Vishvaka (NZ U19 record: 28 @ 9.3, current domestic tourney before today: 179 @ 45, SR: 75)
Love † (NZ U19 record: 8 @ 4) - seemingly lost to the Wellington Lions and rugby.
Taylor (NZ U19 record: 8 @ 2.7) - playing for his Grafton club team this month, not Auckland U19.

Uncapped, making a late run:

Boyle (current domestic tourney before today: 192 @ 64, SR: 104) - about to turn 17, brother has started scoring good List A runs for Canterbury.
Raxworthy (current domestic tourney before today: 235 @ 58.8, SR: 91) - Only just out of 1st XI cricket or may have a year of school remaining. In a bit of hot form opening with Zohrab and Greg Hay for Nelson, as well as hot form here. Many of his drives are sort of dicey and aerial.
Robinson (current domestic tourney before today: 164 @ 54.7, SR: 83) - 17, but too old to make the 2022 NZ U19s. Good record in his two U17 tourneys (one big ton of 142*), good record for Wellington College. Probably rues batting slightly too low down for most of his outings so far with Wgtn U19.
Jacobs (current domestic tourney before today: 174 @ 43.5, SR: 94) - did very little in the U17 tourney last year, but would probably relish a tour of South Africa, with a name like Bevon-John. Beefy build.
Keene (current domestic tourney before today: 214 @ 53.5, SR: 103) - formerly a lower-order agribusinessman. Still bowling plenty of his medium pace.
Jackson (current domestic tourney before today: 210 @ 52.5, SR: 92) - did very little in two U17 tourneys.
Wheeler-Greenall (current domestic tourney before today: 196 @ 49, SR: 104) - 17 but too old for the 2022 NZ U19s. Attended the U17 tourney three times, one ton. Very dominant bottom hand.

Disappointing effort from Taranaki to lose on the first inning considering the bowled HK out for 150 odd and especially with Young & Bruce in their line up.

Bowling lock:

Ashok RLB (NZ U19 record: 10/277 @ 5.1, current domestic tourney: 10/182 @ 3.9, last year's U17s: 17/201 @ 3.8)

'Current domestic tourney' means before yesterday's games, except for Field, O'Rourke, Abbas, Ashok and Hancock.

Capped, but not certainties:

Field RFM (NZ U19 record: 2/203 @ 4.8, current domestic tourney: 0/76 @ 7.6, last year's U19s: 9/242 @ 4.6) - current injury problem? Bounce bowler, deals in dots and the occasional top-edged hook, close to a Plunket Shield debut this season.
Hancock RFM (NZ U19 record: 4/114 @ 6.5, current domestic tourney: 7/154 @ 5.0, last year's U19s: didn't play, 2017 U17s: 3/88 @ 7.9) - has bounce and just a little bit of new ball outswing to offer.
Pringle SLA (NZ U19 record: 3/180 @ 5.1, current domestic tourney: 4/164 @ 4.7, last year's U17s: 6/266 @ 5.4)
Dickson RFM (NZ U19 record: 3/198 @ 6.2, current domestic tourney: 4/107 @ 4.1, last year's U19s: 4/111 @ 6.5)
Jackson RFM (NZ U19 record: 2/151 @ 6.6, current domestic tourney: 3/93 @ 4.4, last year's U17s: 9/184 @ 6.9)
Clarke RFM (NZ U19 record: 2/161 @ 6.2, current domestic tourney: not playing, last year's U19s: 12/234 @ 5.1)
McKenzie RM (NZ U19 record: 4/178 @ 6.0, current domestic tourney: not bowling)
Dasent SLA (NZ U19 record: 1/66 @ 5.1, current domestic tourney: 2/115 @ 4.7, last year's U19s: 11/180 @ 3.7)

Uncapped, making a late run:

Millard RFM (current domestic tourney: 7/129 @ 6.0, no previous U17/U19 tourneys before this) - tall yet slingy action. Off-speed variations.
Abbas LMF (current domestic tourney: 6/107 @ 4.1, last year's U17s: 5/151 @ 4.4, last year's Gillette Cup: 6/169 @ 5.3) - easily young enough for the 2022 squad. Has had some quickfire cameos with the bat for King's College.
O'Rourke RFM (current domestic tourney: 7/99 @ 3.1, last year's U19s: 3/95 @ 4.5, 2017 U17s: 10/104 @ 3.6) - bounce bowler, going past parallel in action may limit his nicks to slips etc. but beggars can't be choosers.
Harper RFM (current domestic tourney: 5/122 @ 4.5, last year's U19s: 5/132 @ 6.1) - hits some of the best-looking sixes in this whole age group. Curiously only given the Canty XI warm-up game against Bangladesh so far; took 2/49 off 7 and hit 35*.
Sidey RMF (current domestic tourney: 5/115 @ 4.7, last year's U17s: 9/152 @ 4.5)
Turner RFM (current domestic tourney: 4/120 @ 5.2, last year's U17s: 5/135 @ 5.2) - a bit of a suspect action.
Gard RM (current domestic tourney: 10/167 @ 4.8, last year's U17s: 14/230 @ 5.2) - good tournament here, good figures at last year's U17s, but there's this "he bowls off about six paces!!" asterisk next to it all, and it's a crippler).
Lanting SLA (current domestic tourney: 4/111 @ 5.3, last year's U19s: 12/181 @ 5.3)
Boyle RLB (current domestic tourney: 5/55 @ 3.7, last year's U17s: 7/238 @ 5.5) - bowls a lot of these leggies for St Bede's 1st XI, and it's probably easier for a 16yo to crack this squad by vying with Pringle and Tashkoff to be the spin bowling support acts to Ashok, rather than forcing his way into the batting's top 6.

I've decided Curtis Millard has actually bowled some of the more potent new ball overs of this tournament. Give me the big bolter and get Millard on the plane.

Very impressive for behind-the-arm footage. God spot.

One thing I've noticed.

The top scorer from the U17s last year, Fergusson from CD, missed the first 2 rounds of the U19s tournament as was playing Gillette Cup for his school. Then came in for CD in rounds 3 and 4 and got consecutive ducks. Didn't feature in last round.

He hadn't been in the NZ U19s squad for their 2 series, so not sure if he was a contender or not. But that would put paid to any late charge, ouch. Can be a cruel game.

Lots to like there.

Do quite like O'Rourke's bowling too, even if there currently aren't a lot of straight lines in his bowling action. Has potential - a do-er upper.

Got to love an action with a big catapult. A longer arc to accelerate the ball through is usually a sign that there's potential in an action.

U19 stuff is a bit weird sometimes, I think a lot of the players end up dropping off because some can adjust their techniques (whether bat or ball) for senior cricket and further development easier than others. You never really know who will end up making it.

Yeah he just can't quite evolve his scoring options enough, Weerasundara. Still glorious in the highlights through his favourite driving arc, but still perishing quickly enough, trying to force all sorts of ill-suited deliveries through that arc.
