Horowhenua-Kapiti actually won on the first innings despite the presence of Young and Bruce, they'd be over the moon with that. No Liam Pinfold to bowl his outswingers and nick out the stars there, only Jamie Pinfold behind the stumps. Liam was in this team and doing alright a couple of weeks back.

I would have seen it if the Otago Volts Twitter account hadn't blocked me for a tweet I made last year along the lines of "could the last one out from the Otago Volts please turn the lights off?" when players were seemingly leaving every week.

I mean, is it even legal to ban the former Voltman from the Otago Volts account? I say no.

I'm such a sucker for the front-on camera. I hadn't particularly noticed Hancock from any of the previous 4 matches, then today a sharp wicket-filled spell towards the camera and I'm all interested.

Lots of centuries so far in the U19s, 8 of them, but only (edit) 3 of them from any players who were in the NZ U19s squads for the recent series.

Might be some tough selecting. Although probably half of them are from various openers I suppose.

under 19 sides must be so hard to select for.

the players have very little body of work behind them, the difference in development between a 16 year old and 18 year old can be huge and the players are just so much more raw.

with the adults if you put 60-70+ blokes in a 10 round season you're going to find 12-13 stand outs you can be fairly confident are your best. not so with under 19s.

Boyle (current domestic tourney before today: 192 @ 64, SR: 104) - about to turn 17, brother has started scoring good List A runs for Canterbury.
Raxworthy (current domestic tourney before today: 235 @ 58.8, SR: 91) - Only just out of 1st XI cricket or may have a year of school remaining. In a bit of hot form opening with Zohrab and Greg Hay for Nelson, as well as hot form here. Many of his drives are sort of dicey and aerial.
Robinson (current domestic tourney before today: 164 @ 54.7, SR: 83) - 17, but too old to make the 2022 NZ U19s. Good record in his two U17 tourneys (one big ton of 142*), good record for Wellington College. Probably rues batting slightly too low down for most of his outings so far with Wgtn U19.
Jacobs (current domestic tourney before today: 174 @ 43.5, SR: 94) - did very little in the U17 tourney last year, but would probably relish a tour of South Africa, with a name like Bevon-John. Beefy build.
Keene (current domestic tourney before today: 214 @ 53.5, SR: 103) - formerly a lower-order agribusinessman. Still bowling plenty of his medium pace.
Jackson (current domestic tourney before today: 210 @ 52.5, SR: 92) - did very little in two U17 tourneys.
Wheeler-Greenall (current domestic tourney before today: 196 @ 49, SR: 104) - 17 but too old for the 2022 NZ U19s. Attended the U17 tourney three times, one ton. Very dominant bottom hand.

Abbas LMF (current domestic tourney: 6/107 @ 4.1, last year's U17s: 5/151 @ 4.4, last year's Gillette Cup: 6/169 @ 5.3) - easily young enough for the 2022 squad. Has had some quickfire cameos with the bat for King's College.
O'Rourke RFM (current domestic tourney: 7/99 @ 3.1, last year's U19s: 3/95 @ 4.5, 2017 U17s: 10/104 @ 3.6) - bounce bowler, going past parallel in action may limit his nicks to slips etc. but beggars can't be choosers.
Harper RFM (current domestic tourney: 5/122 @ 4.5, last year's U19s: 5/132 @ 6.1) - hits some of the best-looking sixes in this whole age group. Curiously only given the Canty XI warm-up game against Bangladesh so far; took 2/49 off 7 and hit 35*.

Boyle RLB (current domestic tourney: 5/55 @ 3.7, last year's U17s: 7/238 @ 5.5) - bowls a lot of these leggies for St Bede's 1st XI, and it's probably easier for a 16yo to crack this squad by vying with Pringle and Tashkoff to be the spin bowling support acts to Ashok, rather than forcing his way into the batting's top 6.

One thing I've noticed.

The top scorer from the U17s last year, Fergusson from CD, missed the first 2 rounds of the U19s tournament as was playing Gillette Cup for his school. Then came in for CD in rounds 3 and 4 and got consecutive ducks. Didn't feature in last round.

He hadn't been in the NZ U19s squad for their 2 series, so not sure if he was a contender or not. But that would put paid to any late charge, ouch. Can be a cruel game.

Do quite like O'Rourke's bowling too, even if there currently aren't a lot of straight lines in his bowling action. Has potential - a do-er upper.

Got to love an action with a big catapult. A longer arc to accelerate the ball through is usually a sign that there's potential in an action.

U19 stuff is a bit weird sometimes, I think a lot of the players end up dropping off because some can adjust their techniques (whether bat or ball) for senior cricket and further development easier than others. You never really know who will end up making it.

Yeah he just can't quite evolve his scoring options enough, Weerasundara. Still glorious in the highlights through his favourite driving arc, but still perishing quickly enough, trying to force all sorts of ill-suited deliveries through that arc.
