*Official* England in New Zealand 2019

Also I wonder if the memory of that 2015 series in England is so strong, he still expected NZ to play the Mccullum way and was more than a little surprised to see them willing to play the attritional game.

mitchell was tidy this test. it was flat obv but he batted well and his bowling was also tidy 5th bowler stuff on a road and a lot of bowling was asked of him. he's definite 2nd xi material.

Didn't watch much from day 3 onwards, and that was my biggest question : how adequate is Mitchell as a *bowling*replacement for CdG? Guess the jury is out.

Need an accurate Astle (NJ) /McMillan type 5th bowler for Aus who can bowl stump to stump and force their batsmen to create the pace. In CdG's absence hope Mitchell is up to it, there's no one in the top 6 who can fill that role..

Can't remember exactly but likely I called the results way back and remember having said England batting looks weak.

Good thing both the guns got a hundy each. They'll go with good confidence and likely are going to be a thorn for Aussies. I have this feeling Raval if given a chance will do well. If Raval and Latham can spend 10-15 overs in the middle consistently I think we'll see a well fought series in Aussie.

Tbf, out of England's last 7 tests played in NZ, 5 have ended in draws, so I could understand why an English correspondent might take a slightly dimmer view of NZ pitches. Of course, 3 of those 5 draws have been heavily affected by rain (the 1st and 2nd tests in 2013 and now this one), and the other day have been thrilling matches with close finishes that easily could ended in results. Still a ridiculous flounce from Dobell.
That's fine...but (and this is certainly not a go at you) if that's the sort of cricket correspondent he is, then he should probably just cover county cricket. Which it seems like he probably should. Because I don't believe he has any idea of the vagaries of Test cricket.

How many series wins in a row for NZ? Can't remember them losing or drawing since SA in 2017 or so.

EDIT : They drew in SL prior to this one. How many unbeaten?

Lost to SA in our backyard in 16/17. Won 6, drawn 2 since then

As for Dobell, you really can write at least 60% of his articles in the last decade based on the following format:

"[Aspect of the game that England is poor at e.g. prising out wickets in batting-friendly conditions] is bad for cricket and teams/countries which do it or encourage it are essentially a threat to the survival of the game. Conversely, [aspect of the game that England is good at] is the summary of all that is good and holy about cricket and life in general, frankly."

I wonder if he enjoyed the one sided show where even that bogan Warner who couldn't buy a run In the ashes kept piling them on for fun against a hapless borderline minnow as against a struggling root nudging a single off his hips.

That's 4 hundreds, one double hundred and another closer to hundred in this test match. That for sure does make it a flat track but what about the first test? A side was shot out twice.

Anyways done and dusted. Shame doesn't count towards championship points.

Will the test championship points tempt the home sides to prepare pitches to suit home sides and likely result every game?

I don't think there's point for offer for a draw.

Hot take there, well done for going against the grain on that one.

Tough to find any positives from this trip for England, I think the lack of intent fed down from the top and was reflected in a couple of really sub-standard, lethargic displays barring the usual 100% efforts from the usual candidates.

Has it told us anything nw about this England side ? Well, Burns has once again shown a propensity to score runs depite not being technically perfect or aesthetically pleasing, yet he finds a way to churn them out. Sibley has technical flaws that will get exposed at this level but no reason why he can't develop, Denly showed once again flashes of a top player but for me will not maintain any high level of consistency. Root is still a wonderful batsman and Pope has an abundance of potential, but please not with the gloves again!

Our wicket-keeping spot is shrowded in muddled thinking and Buttler has to really step up in South Africa. Sam Curran still isn't a viable option for me unless conditions are so heavily weighted in favour of a swing bowler. Woakes and Broad have not done their reputation any harm away from home, the spinners spot is still insecure and if Anderson returns to join Archer and Broad then we will that spinner to be able to hold a stick.

As for Archer, very disappointed with him this tour for a number of reasons.

Despite those negatives, I do believe we have the right man in charge in terms of Silverwood, and it will improve in Test cricket, but it won't happen overnight. The series in South Africa I expect we'll see some exciting cricket, with both sides currently battling plenty of weaknesses, but we can win that series with the right selections, again an aspect I expect Silverwood to be heavily involved in and to get right.
