james marshall couldn't even average over 30 for his fc team for the majority of his career. he is the worst batsman to play for nz this century. it was never a shoot out between hay and flynn, both were/are better than jarshall.

hay definitely was a square dominant player back then, but the nitpicking of his technique at the time and the dead silence on marshalls output or flynn also being square dominant was notable. andy moles was a much better used car salesman for his crappy all hype players than dermot reeve or whoever cd had. all the media and coach reports referred to occurred in the pre-vault era where we couldn't do any fact checking on what nzc were trying to sell us.

he deserved his chance to average 25 for 10 tests with one or two **** tease knocks.

hay drives a lot now, so i don't think it's an issue any longer. easily the unluckiest nz opener ever to not get a test match. look at the names in the 90s...

Well I remember journo Dylan Cleaver somewhat cagily talking about the lengthy Greg Hay hiatus that followed his non-elevation. It was a Trescothick type of deal, probably far milder symptoms but it was in that vein. Whether Hay had already indicated to NZC that being put in front of the cricket world for scrutiny was the last thing he wanted, or the blues came after doing well in FC and not getting a call, I don't know.

Heh, let's see what Bahnz and Flem thought in 2008...

Interesting news today.

ND coach says Greg Hay is highly talented however he relies too much on scoring backward of square and doesn't play enough in the V and, like most inexperienced batsmen, can play loose shots. Now scoring options backward of square can be a strength, Daniel Vettori has been getting away with it for years and if Hay uses wise shot selection, he can too, however it would be great for him to play in the V alot more as well. Taylor is a good example of improvements made in scoring options.

James Marshall apparently has improved his technique, plays alot straighter and is mentally tougher than before.

Personally I have no idea anymore on who to select. What it seems to boil down to is we have plenty of middle order bats with high talent/potential but are flawed in some way (Todd I've posted on before). Good news is the flaws can be worked on if the batsman is willing to make the changes.

Oh and inside info tells me that Peter Ingram has not been selected.:@ :p

I would've elected for picking Hay ahead of Marshall, though I suppose the selectors were looking for a back up number 3 (even though Marshall bat's at number 4 for ND). Redmond is a decent selection, though I'm surprised that Bell wasn't at least selected in the squad to go to England. Other than that, it's a decent squad, and I'll look forward to seeing what side the selectors put on the field in a few weeks.

That's a shame to hear. Re Flem, as noted elsewhere, Hay was a middle-order player back in his youth. By the time he reemerged, Raval and Latham were ahead of him in the queue. And given the cavalcade of post Richardson hacks that we went through from 2005-2015, it was no surprise that the selectors decided to shut up shop once they finally stumbled upon a couple of blokes who could average 35+. So I wouldn't say he's been unlucky (except in the way that Kippax describes). Wouldn't hesitate to give him a crack this season if Raval continues to struggle against England though.

Haha, very good strawman. Seems about right, I forgot that Marshall wasn't actually batting at 3 at the time. A very Bracewell move, presumably based on Marshall's clone managing to defy gravity for so long.

Yes I didn't know that re Hay's absence. He's had a good career for CD since then at least.

I do like though that this discussion is going on while GAS asked this in the other thread:
How in the name of all that is holy can anyone get out to Matt McEwan?
You know who was thoroughly knocked over by the mighty McEwan today?

Haha, tbf McEwan has a pretty damn good FC record and the ball he got Hay with looked like a genuinely good nut. Another guy who can curse his luck that he was born in NZ rather than England - he'd probably be sitting on a £90k contract and have 500 FC wickets to his name if he were a county stalwart. It's kinda a pity that he'll never play for NZ, would be a real cult hero if he ever did.

cdg without the batting, a nearly hero to medium pacers everywhere

i didn't know that about hay either and it explains a lot. also 2008 phlegm was even dumber than the 2019 version.

A cross between Merv Hughes and Darren Stevens imo.

I do remember that during the home series against England in 2008 Simon Doull was regularly calling for James Marshall to replace Sinclair in the test side. That would have meant he came in at number 5. Instead he ended up replacing Fleming who was the number 3, and Flynn came in for Sinclair.

I think we can all agree James got picked because of Hamish.

Still, he'll no doubt feature in pub quizzes somewhere by virtue of being dropped after scoring 161 in an ODI and never playing again.

Always going to be a weird side with all Plunket shield players out. Good to see Clarkson is alive - wonder whether he's only half fit, or whether CD just left him out.

I'm pleased to see Katene Clarke has been selected. He looked like a clean striker in the Under-19 WC in NZ.

One of those sides that gives some folks in the sidelines a taste of playing against international sides but likely England won't take it all that seriously. Probably easing Ferguson in I guess, he's likely to bowl at 60% in all likelihood.

Excited to see how Clarkson, Leopard and Seifert go.

Wonder if Blair Tickner will get an international gig. If not, he should be in this side.

What’s wrong with the post? It’s great to see Māori players in rep sides, a traditionally underrepresented demographic that definitely has something to offer.

Looks like my dream of going to the MCG on Boxing Day won’t happen. Tickets coming back in early Jan are horrendously expensive.

Looking at going to see us play India in Wellington in February. Uni break for me and a lot cheaper.
