South Africa team selection

Moore not coming in for Malan is a strange one, considering the rest feel like simple rotations.
Probably stranger is that Hamza sits out for de Bruyn when it should be Zondo to meet certain requirements.

We get absolutely nothing out of Hamza not getting a couple of knocks for a potential test player than a 30 year-old never been averaging 30 in FC and 15 for SA A over 10 games.

Gill & Nair always the big 2 to get in this Indian team.

Probably 3 bowlers fighting for 2 positions for the first test in Philander, Ngidi & Piedt.

Piedt has got to play. I don't see Philander having the penetration needed. Rabada and Ngidi are much more likely bowlers to take wickets in these conditions.

I would too. I can't imagine any pitch favouring Philander out there.

Was just thinking they may say experience and Ngidi's recent fitness issues but Philander has had his own issues himself.

Whilst I am certain that Dane Piedt is our 2nd best longer format spinner with no Harmer I do have worries about 2/140 at the back of the mind but he could also impress but think we learnt our lesson going in with 1 spinner v Sri Lanka. Mulder's selection (if he was 100% ready) would make things so much easier for balance.

This is what I keep thinking. Even if subcontinent is not the place.

And every-time I see Klaasen in the test squad it just feels wrong, I know he is backup for QDK and unlikley to play unless for injury. But I feel that Verreyenne or Qeshile could do with the experience so much more. Pity for Seconds really.

I don't think Philander will be a big wicket taking threat but who do we have to bowl dry if we need top? Rabada is our weapon. Keshav to me has to be given the license to attack and if Piedt plays, while I think he is a Test quality spinner, I don't think holding up an end is his forte.

If we play 4 bowlers then I reckon all need to be versatile in being able to attack and defend when required. I reckon we have to play 7 batsmen. If we had Smith, Amla, Kallis, de Villiers we could maybe get a way with a 6/5 split but even then I would say Vern doesn't bring loads of value in the sub so why go 6/5 split anyway.

If we had Mulder in top 7 then he could be the stock bowler and the main 4 wouldn't have to worry too much about a spell holding up an end unless game required it.

Morris has signed for the Thunder in the BBL which confirms he has basically gone T20 freelance but you sort of knew it when he wasnt on the Titans contract list.

I thought his SA career was over not being in SA squad now but supposedly it isn't.

Think it is going to be about the T20 WC next year, and maybe who else comes up and shows some decent form. I don't think he is in any long term plans.

Yeah T20 CWC for sure. Just disappointing that another player who could be playing in our 4-day cricket is gone. Must be close to 20+ now. No system can deal with that sadly.

No CSA contract and at 32 you go to look after the family and retirement but that has probably been sorted already with IPL. :D

Glad he ended on a high in the World Cup in 1 of the longer formats. Capable of more than he showed though over his 50-over career.

Morris showed glimpses of his ability internationally, but was too inconsistent and prone to going missing at key moments. Think he is a bit overrated but he can't possibly be worse than McClenaghan was for the Thunder

Agreed. I'm all for x-factor players but you can't get away with inconsistency at international level which is what held him back both with his batting and bowling.

Thing is, it was so much better having him and a stock bowling all-rounder like Lucky instead of both Pretorius and Lucky. For me it is one or the other there and the sooner they move on from Pretorius the better. Amazed he is in this T20 squad.

Now lets hope for a good batting performance. Piedts lack of wickets a little concerning.
It would be great. May even be a late addition to the squad if so.

Piedt seems to do alright in getting the tail end wickets. I think most of us like Piedt but there is that lingering doubt for me whether he can step up because it won't be easy. I guess it will depend on how the wicket looks but will be amazed if he doesn't play the first test.
