South Africa team selection

Squad has been announced for Sri Lanka. Muthusamy leapfrogging Piedt now. There will be rain around Durban next week so not sure how Kingsmead will play. Temba also fit so we are probably going to see:
1. de Zorzi
2. Markram
3. Stubbs
4. Temba
5. Bedingham
6. Verreynne
7. Mulder
8. Jansen
9. Coetzee
10. Maharaj
11. Rabada

I suppose if there is spin around we go for Muthusamy instead of Coetzee.

A little bit puzzled why Dane Paterson is in the squad, he is a steady bowler but almost 36 years old, time to move on to the next generation,

Not a terrible squad v SL but I don't know why Paterson is there, and Harmer must count himself unlucky.

Who could have been chosen ahead of Paterson though? Swanepoel or Pretorius?

Do the test matches overlap with domestic first-class matches? Paterson's really only there as an emergency backup, so maybe there's an argument for it being better for other fringe bowlers to be getting game time rather than carrying drinks as they can be brought into the team at short notice if necessary. I'm not convinced that's a good enough argument to keep him around though.

We've come to the conclusion that CSA's policy appears to be that players need to be playing for a domestic team in order to be eligible for selection. If that is the case and they've made it clear to the players then Harmer has effectively retired from international cricket unless he decides to play for a South African team again. If they haven't made it clear then that's a major blunder on their part.

Harmer isn't eligible as he hasn't played SA domestic cricket for 2 seasons. Can't be unlucky if you don't make yourself eligible for selection.

There is a round from 28th November that overlaps with the first test. Only western province vs knights overlaps with the second test.
