England players and selection discussion thread

This is definitely out there and likely dumb and doesn't solve anything long term but could England rotate wicketkeepers this winter?

Buttler is keeper for NZ. Gives Bairstow a much needed break to re-evaluate his career.
Bairstow is keeper for SA. Has fond memories of SA having scored his first ton there. Good record against them home and away.
Foakes is keeper for SL. Best actual keeper and plays spin well. Was excellent there last year.

It keeps the multiformat players Buttler and Bairstow fairly fresh (assuming they don't play as batsman for both the other tours) and slightly unclogs the middle order positions to allow Pope and maybe another opportunities.

It's certainly zany and something I might try on international cricket captain but probably doesn't work well in reality.

I'd say there's absolutely no chance of that happening*, but it's not really a terrible idea

*it might still happen as a matter of course, ie. one being dropped and another selected, but not with the intention of rotation or to switch the keepers for each series

We simply cannot go back to Moeen, he's had too many chances & although when I first saw him I thought he could be a fantastic batsman, he's just not good enough with either bat or ball now & never will be. You simply cant take him to Australia for the next Ashes! Be honest, Root is a better spinner. Time to invest in someone else, he's had all his chances. A great shame but sport is tough at this level. For me, Bairstow goes the same way. I'd choose between Buttler or Foakes. But we dont know as yet who is taking over as head coach, but I hope whoever it is, they make some definitive choices. I want to have Test players in the Test side & one dayers in the one day side!

As fragile as our batting lineup is, and likely will be for the forseeable future, I think at the very least we have found a very decent squad of bowlers. I'm hoping that we will get to see a lineup involving Anderson, Broad and Archer before the former retires

Moeen will be back. He had bowled well in Tests since he recall until that Edbaston Test. They obviously had to drop him then but no reason at all why he does not come back when they play two spinners. There is also the batting to be taking into account if we are playing Archer, Broad and Anderson. Unless Archer starts showing something with the bat it leaves us with a long tail, Moeen back in some form with the bat at 8 would make a big difference in those circumstances.

anderson

i haven't seen pope or foakes play so im relying on testimony from here. bairstow is toast imo. i've seen talk pope shouldn't be asked to bat top 4 because he bats lower for his county and if that's the case then he shouldn't be near the team as a specialist batsman anyway. sheltered runs at fc level don't count.

i want to fit sam curran in there but i can't without asking even more of stokes by elevating him to #4. potentially foakes could drop out and buttler could keep wicket.

englands resources really are lopsided.

Bijed mentioned before about Root not playing ODI cricket and I think if he could be persuaded it would be really good for him. Would give him at least a year off limited overs cricket, again it is a pretty unrealistic idea though.

Better for him to ditch T20I than ODI. Trying to tune himself into a fast scorer in limited overs has messed him up in tests. T20I is the worst for that.

If at the very least, I think (hope) our batting lineup has gained an established opener in Rory Burns. Started off the summer looking all over the place, but become increasingly more comfortable at the crease throughout the series. Hopefully he builds on this over the winter tours.

I'm not as confident with Denly but he might just do the job for now, though I would like to see Sibley tried out at some point. He needs to work on putting away the drive at the start of an innings and leaving the ball.

I hope we've also come to the conclusion that successful odi players shouldn't be prioritised over those scoring runs and taking wickets in the cc. Butler is the only one you can say that has been successful and even then he is still very much on thin(ish) ice.

I think you must pick your Test side with both eyes on the Ashes tour down under. It's what we build for. These series are, as we have seen, the pinnacle of cricket for English & Australian players. You need a team full of ability, self belief, & toughness. It's the benchmark upon which every player is judged. Just pick me a team based upon that. We won't go wrong.

I think I know what you are talking about.

I think Bairstow is the one to miss out this winter, has become more reliable in the sc recently and the paintball from pacers seem to have him bowled or lbw every time he bats.

Bizarre interview with Michael Vaughan. He said Anderson and Broad should never play together again. If Anderson gets back to fitness and they’re both fully fit they should alternately have one series on and one series off. This strategy is somehow linked to the next Ashes series.

We don't just play 4 fast bowlers so saying only one at a time is strange. You play your best 4. Bowling isn't something that is planned for two years down the line. Who knows who will be fit. One thing going to Australia, England will hope that 90mph bowlers eg Archer, Stone, Wood are fit.

2016 - Broad Anderson Woakes Stokes Finn Ball (6)
2017 - Broad Anderson Roland-Jones Stokes Woakes Overton Ball Curran Wood (9)
2018 - Broad Anderson Stokes Curran Woakes Wood T Curran Overton (8)
2019 - Broad Archer Stokes Woakes Anderson S Curran Wood Stone Overton (9)

I swear Vaughan just talks trash for attention.

Dom Sibley is making a case for an opening spot this winter allowing Denly to drop to 3 and Root 4. Has anyone seen him bat? He is putting together the runs as a pleasing strike rate of around 50

I think burns has proven that any player in the championship scoring 1000 runs and averaging 50 should be given a shot in the team, especially while 5 of our top 7 average mid 30s or worse in tests. Who knows how it would have turned out if sibley had opened with burns from the start of the ashes which many people had been calling for. Even if he matched Denly over the series we could well have come out on top instead of drawing
