Unlikely. Have you seen the batting line-up they're bowling at? Cummins and Hazlewood will have us 4 down by lunch and you're into the bowlers.

Think he's a captain that gets the most out of his team rather than himself. I think having him captain has given Smith license to play his own game. Especially keeping the likes of Warner and Bancroft away from it too. It's best for Smith if the Aussie captain isn't a fiery character probably. Maybe I'm clutching at straws slightly but Paine seems the right leader for the Aussie team as an England fan. England have made a mistake making their best batsman captain. The captaincy selections could be the difference between the two teams but I'm not 100% sure about that. Root without it would break out of the shackles that seem to be upon him.

To suggest the decision was exclusively his, is a bit incredulous, tbf. The current Australian set-up involves “captaincy by committee”, especially longer term decision-making. Besides if all the catches struck, his decision may have been seen as genus.

I think he is, Boucher was nothing special. Paine is definitely having an off series with the gloves right now though.

Hard to say with Boucher because of the sheer number of regulation takes generated from Pollock and the lack of spinners, but he never spilled them with the regularity that Paine does I feel.
Why does Tasmania prefer Wade with the gloves btw? Always thought Paine was supposedly the best gloveman in Australia.

Tasmania never really preferred Wade. Paine wasn't even in the team when he was picked for Aus, but when he did go back to play Shield he took the gloves and Wade was relegated to specialist bat.
Paine has definitely not been at his best this series, not sure how to explain why though.

Paine did his bit. England did their bit. Now australia can bat 2.5 days to score 600+ which has room for an individual 300 odd.

I would actually take Handscomb over Bancroft as a keeper. Would take a plank of wood over either of them though
