Paine is poor against pace but quite decent for spin IMO

Aussie fans and media should postpone the verdict on Paine till after the Ashes. Horrible to give him hell while everything's still on the line. I'll bet on a substantial contribution from him this next Test.

Paine will obviously play out the series, however is quickly becoming one of the most hated captains Australia has ever had.

At least previous captains could make runs to take some focus off their tactical blunders, or were still tactical brilliant when out of form (Mark Taylor)

at no point in tim paine's career has poor performance actually led to the wider cricketing public lowering their opinion of him, so I don't see why this would

Yes, Healy, Gilchrist and Haddin were all poor to spinners, as no doubt were Oldfield, Tallon and Grout.

For those who can remember Wayne Phillips' glovework, was it better or worse than Timmy's?

Statistically he was marginally a better batsman and his average would, no doubt, have been higher if wasn't asked to open the batting in the early part of his career.

Pretty average keeper from what I've seen and recall; unfortunate as he should've bern a key bat for Oz in the mid-80s (one of the few in that side who could handle the Windies pace attack) but his career just faded away.

He was an awful keeper. If Ray Bright has a reputation for being an ordinary spin bowler its all down to Phillips missing a ton of stumpings and catches off him. It got to a stage where Bright had enough and openly raged on screen at Phillips' incompetence.

Crazy he was picked ahead of Rixon, which prompted the latter to drop out of an Ashes series and play in South Africa instead (according to him, anyway). Australia's slim picking for wicketkeepers in the 80's is probably attributable to Bacchus' ownership of that position for years, not unlike the post-Gilchrist era.

Allan Border was a massive fan of Wayne Phillips. After the Lord's Test of 1985 he described him as a "genius of a cricketer". Australia had one of those small totals that they'd failed on twice in 1981 to get and were 65/5. Phillips came in and scored 30 odd (might have been 29 but whatever) and got them to within a dozen or so of the target. Genius...………...

Phiilips averaged 40 in Test cricket when played as a specialist batsman, by contrast....

He averaged 17 while playing as both opener and wicketkeeper, which is a ridiculous burden for any Test cricketer, much less an 80's one.

I was wondering if this needs a Joe Root failure sister thread. He hasn't made a specific howler, but his use of the bowling attack and his tactics to Smith have been poor. He's just all around the drabbest, most uninspiring sporting leader since Glenn Roeder.

There are no tactics for Smith. Smith gets out when he gets tired.

And Phillips was an awful Keeper but a very talented batsman who could carve anyone up on his day. If he’d been able to bat at five or six without keeping he would have been a fine player for us in a very dark era
