Where people really giving the appointment of Muzumdar that much stick? I don't know for sure if it is the right move, but seems sensible. A man they worked with at the spin camp who knows the players and conditions well. What do people expect? Hire Tendulkar for 6 weeks? It is obviously a short term appointment to try help us get through the Indian series. If he helps improve any of the batsmen techniques against spin he would have helped the team. If he does work out it would be nice to see him be available to us when we head to the subcontinent on a consultancy basis. I don't expect much this coming tour, except hope for a good showing (there is always the unfortunate constant of the supporters hope!).

As for the overall batting woes. None of it is unrealised or even that unexpected. In the last 5 years we have lost Smith, Kallis, deVillers Amla all of which are vying for a spot in the SA all time XI, and we going to lose Faf within the year. Don't replace that easily it is going to take time, if it is even immediately doable. For 10 plus years there was one maybe two spots open in the top 6, on and off. Maybe CSA should have worked better on succession plans, but really this is going to be a rebuilding phase of trying to find 4 new batsmen of real quality to take us into the future, not going to be easy, and even those batsmen will take time to settle into there roles.

Since 2010 we have brought in 11 new Test batsmen, 7 of those are now in the team:
Alviro Petersen
Faf
Elgar
QDK
S. van Zyl
Bavuma
Vilas
S. Cook
T. de Bruyn
Markram
Hamza
(Mulder)

Biggest player missing off that list is Rossouw. van Zyl is the only one who could possibly consider himself unlucky to not have been given greater opportunity. Else players on form have pretty much been picked. We have lost some good players domestically that could have possibly be given opportunity now. Rossouw would have been a definite and possible Colin Ackerman. Else I don't really see any batsmen that would have really helped us through this transition period.

This summer against Eng I would really like us to bite the bullet and pick some those youngsters of quality and give them a good run, it is the only way we are going to be able to rebuild. I am really glad Hamza and Markram are in the team now.

By the end of 2020 I would love to see a Test lineup similar to:

Markram
Elgar
Hamza
van Tonder
Breetzke
Qeshile
QDK
Mulder
Maharaj
Rabada
Ngidi
Dupavillon/Nortje

Interesting to see Veryenne and Bedingham given a go. And wondering if Parsons will be given a run, considering what they a doing with him. And I would like to see more of Keegan Peterson, always looks a quality player and seems to have started scoring runs now.

It's a tricky debate when it comes to succession plans. Look at Rossouw for instance, ideally he would be in the team now. Look whether his reasons were justified or not, players have other responsibilities to think of.

I think we have the talent. It's about backing them and being prepared to take some losses for a while. Although with our bowling attack we should still remain competitive.

I'm a big believer in every player in your top 6/7 being able to score 100s. I think that is what we have to aim for.

Like you say - producing test batsmen with 40+ averages when you play home games in SA don't fall off trees.

Since readmission we only have 8 who come and since retired ie Kallis, de Villiers, Smith, Amla, G.Kirsten, Cullinan, Gibbs & Prince.

We now currently only have Faf and Markram with de Kock and Elgar having spent long periods there but now fallen out.

So that is 10 in 27 years back in test cricket.

I am putting Verreynne, Bedingham, Petersen with Moore, J.Malan and Rickelton category. They could step up but I can't say it with any confidence.

de Bruyn, Hamza, Mulder + the big 3 Breetzke, Qeshile and van Tonder look to have a lot going for them to be in the side at the right time.

The doubts with the guys above are all different reasons. Take for example Verreynne - there is a massive outcry on being left out of SA A and MSL selections. I think he is a good player but for me he only gets into the SA team if he keeps. He performs that role brilliantly with this little 50+ knocks but I want to see 100s if he is going to get a shot as a batsmen. You also feel right now they rewarding Klaasen, Second with Qeshile getting the nod ahead of him.

I'd also love to have 12 players in our line-up

Seriously though, I'd add Verreyne and Janneman Malan to those batsmen and I think somewhere among those names we have our future top 7.

Poor showing from the batsmen.... hopefully not a sign of things to come for the tour. Want to see some runs from the test players next match.

4 40s from Jansen, Hamza, Klaasen and Mulder

Hoping to see Markram, Moore, Hamza, de Bruyn, Mulder, Klaasen, Muthusamy, Jansen, Piedt, Sipamla, Ngidi next game.

Hard luck for Keegan Petersen but not sure where to fit him in bar for Muthusamy.

I would like to see Petersen come in for Jansen or Muthusamy. For no other reason that I think every batsmen needs to be given maximum opportunity at the moment to prove themselves test capable. Experience in subcontinent and against quality spin is such a crucial element to build for a batsmen. Obviously you want to see the A team win games, but I think it is more important testing the next level and at the moment we need batsmen.

Definitely Muthusamy. For reasons discussed yesterday/

It would probably more fair to replace Jansen. Jansen is obviously somebody they have a great deal of faith in but Muthusamy's has earned his chance, we are in India, and he is in the test squad.

The test team has a few variables but 2 main one's.

1. Elgar
2. Markram
3. Hamza
4. de Bruyn
5. Du Plessis
6. Bavuma
7. de Kock
8. Philander
9. Maharaj
10. Rabada
11. Ngidi

or

Piedt for Philander/Ngidi

Nortje only plays if those fast bowlers are struggling or injured.

Like wise for Muthusamy and Klaasen for injury in the top 6/7 too.

Yeah. Basically same team that played against SL. And it is probably the best for now, need to just play much better. I would love to see Mulder in that squad. Piedt in, if conditions demand, even if I wonder that Philander/Ngidi might get something out of the pitch considering how they attack the stumps.

I would be giving responsibility to Hamza and de Bruyn too batting at 3/4. I would fill them with confidence if I was the new batting coach and Nkwe. The stage is yours. Show us what you made of.

Faf best at 5 and ideally a new guy comes in to replace him batting 5/6/7 first. Like wise for Bavuma. Can't score 100s so will keep him 6 and hopefully enough batsmen put up their hands to put him under pressure.

I quite like the fact Mulder will get the chance to start the season in the 4-day side for the Lions. Could do with a nice confidence boost before Poms come.
