Question on ban announcements

The CW community doesn't accept unpopular opinions well unless packaged in an extremely apologetic and thoroughly well explained post. One filled with disclaimers that put to rest the readers worst assumptions of the poster.

You can dismissively/half heartedly/aggressively make a point that everyone agrees with and no one will question it for a second. Make a point the general population disagrees with in the same tone and you'll be mocked and slandered and accused of coming into the conversation with the worst intentions.

Just the way the world works in this day and age I suppose. People aren't going to be generous with their interpretation of your post. You have to go out of your way to prove that you deserve to be taken seriously, instead of being taken seriously by default. But if you have the right opinions, then no one will question you.

Point taken mate and agree with you on every aspect. Having said that I refused to fit on for the sake of it. Forums, by its design are supposed to encourage flow of thoughts and opposing viewpoints but I have recently noticed that personal slander is thrown around here even the moderators which is discouraging. It's fine though, at the end of the day its the forum that sadly suffers.

The people who have been here for ages know all the red flags when they see them. They don't give the benefit of the doubt anymore. They've seen a thousand different people post here in their time, hundreds on any given topic, and a lot of them are extremely active in other online communities out of CW.

That's why all the talk of encouraging mods to perma ban trouble posters quicker, rather than give them benefit of the doubt.

Sometimes I wonder if it's a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy here. We see a new poster with some red flags in their posting, and are quick to label them a troll or something similar. In doing so, don't we push them further into behaving in a trollish and antagonising manner? After all, they're new here, they don't care enough to try and win the community over. Right or wrong, ego is a thing, and they're not gonna bow down to the pressure put on them from a bunch of randoms on the internet. They'll just dig their heels in, get in a few **** fights, and then either leave or get banned, leaving all the CWers feeling vindicated in their initial judgements.

Very well put. Ego's on here are definitely a thing. To be honest, yesterdays incident in the American Politics thread proved this to me. You are spot on. Having said that, I have never been on to try and fit in. I call it like I see it. I am happy to be proven wrong but nobody on here as given a point by point rebuttal to any of my posts. All I have received is vague criticism, ridicule and borderline bullying attempts. It's quite lame really.

I'm pretty sure being unnecessarily aggressive (otherwise known as being an asshole) is against the rules, actually.

A lot of long time posters here fit sledger's definition of an asshole quite well so I wouldnt worry much about it, wrongun

Yeah. It'd be more worrying if they fitted my actual asshole rather than my definition of one. I guess.

That thread, and honestly that whole sub is a dumpster fire and you have to be ready for the worst kind of glib remarks and pot shots when you enter.

Plus yes as ***** says unpopular opinions are unpopular

Haha, this sanctimony from the guy who bullied Amirfan into leaving. This isn't a CW specific thing at all. Every community places the onus of fitting in on the newcomer.

Yeah, I just don't go in often there for this very reason. I don't think I've seen many better political subfora though.

I miss all the trash talk by not bothering with the New/Politics Forum. I think it was a cunning plan by the site Admin to get it all in one place.

I'd really emphasise that the American Politics thread is the worst for it in that sub-forum. The amount of rather toxic debates/arguments in it over the years must far surpass any other thread in the sub-forum and perhaps the whole forum.

yes my racist friend? i would like to know more about your thoughts on black magic and why it isn't racist

Hard to remember what my exact thoughts were in 2014 but I don't remember using or even endorsing such an endearing term

What a wonderful world we live in where you don't actually have to say racist things to be a racist, but can be labelled as such for so much as encouraging introspection, 5 years ago, in a thread about having honest and open dialogue about where you should draw the line

lol
