Is everyone writing off Guptill for 2023? He'll be 36 and there's not too many ODI's really until the 18 months before that, and given he doesn't play tests now, I'm sure that could be his swansong. Ross Taylor on the other hand I'm not sure about.
Would like to Seifert/Phillips at the top of the order with Guptill in the next season or so. Move Nicholls down at 5 to replace Latham and have Seifert/Phillips really work on their keeping. I would argue that Seifert is a better batt but Phillips is a better keeper.
Guppy could do a Macca or Jimmy or Elliot of some sort, have a lean period and come back later and become an absolute gun (again for him)
But I would like to see competition for these positions that’s the only way to generate the best results in those positions, we basically had no in form openers, at all this year. Nips was there to help out, like Matt Horn.
Guppy, Young, Seifert, Ravindra, fight for 2 positions.
Someone said we need a closer, and I think that person needs to have power (Neesham), will have so much experience in another 4 years (Neesham), has the nerves to close games (Neesham esp bowling).
=P so I think maybe Neesh and Anderson can be trained to close games for the next few years, Nichols actually has the shots and power to close games now showing he has the big game temperament, but he might bat at 4-5 so might not see out the end, but he could still be an Elliot/McCca type player. It’d be pretty cool if we have in form Nips, Neesham and Anderson to close out games
Just need to keep the health of those guys, One of the openers above could be a closer if they wanna train them, but I think they need more experience and we don’t know how their nerves are.
Santa looks more like a support player in the last 10 and can hurt the opposition in the last 1-2 overs but not as the main striker, even if he finds the form vs Eng last summer.
And Blundell should be trialled opening or in the middle order as well, he did all he could without having a shot, more options for the batting department. We actually could have depth and a healthy squad this time, fingers crossed.
