*Official* Bangladesh Tour of New Zealand 2019

Yeah, I'm fine with Astle getting a go in tests. Ajaz is likely to be a non-entity on the kinds of surfaces that are usually produced for tests in New Zealand, and his batting leaves NZ with a worryingly long tail. Astle fully deserves a shot given his consistency of the past 10 years in Plunket Shield, and also provides NZ with a decent #8

This is a bit of a myth that seems to have arisen, I think ... I reckon Sodhi has been very good in ODIs.

2017 season: 4 wickets at 26.25, 4.11 rpo
2017/18 season: 10 wickets at 25.20, 6.69 rpo
2018/19 season: 10 wickets at 37.00, 5.31 rpo (including the Indian series where nobody took any wickets, but he was the one that kept a lid on scoring)
But....those numbers aren't "very good" at all. Averaging 30+ and going 6 RPO over the last 2 seasons combined is barely passable.

Its not over 6 ... he’s gone at 5.79 over the past two seasons, and I’ve taken out those 2017 season stats because they were against Ireland and Bangladesh in England. 20 wickets at 31.1 taking out that pre-Champions Trophy series ... I think that’s fine for an NZ leg spinner.

Agree... Sodhi ODI proponents, come back to me when he can bowl 10 overs without an easy long-hop every over.

He can get away with it in T20s, where going for 7-8 an over & taking the odd wicket is good, but those ODI numbers are NOT good at all. Basically means he goes for about 20 more runs than Santner in the average ODI.

Their career RPOs are 4.9 vs 5.5, so Sodhi goes for 6 more runs per 10 overs, not 20.

Their career ODI records actually make interesting comparison. Santner averages 34.7 at a strike rate of 42.4. Sodhi averages 35.7 at a strike rate of 38.7.

Santner has averaged 34.33 in 2017/18 and 46.5 in 2018/19. Economy rate still great though.

Sodhi was surely hard done by being dropped after two wicketless games against the best players of spin in the world after he had taken 8 wickets at 18 in the series against Sri Lanka before that?Got to show a bit of confidence in your leggie.

Fair enough, perhaps there's not as much in it as I thought.

For some reason I thought in the last two years Santner went at about 4.5 and Sodhi over 6, but turns out it's more like 4.7 vs. 5.5, with Sodhi's stats being slightly flattered from his 4 games vs. Ireland and Bangladesh in that tri-series. I still maintain Sodhi bowls far too many long-hops.

I don't get why there is so much anti-Tastle sentiment. He's the test incumbent, a position he pretty clearly earned. Patel and Somerville only got a couple of games because he was injured. Sodhi has had more of a go than anyone at test level and hasn't been up to scratch, hence Astle being in this position. We are complaining about someone who has earned his incumbency being selected when he hasn't even begun to have his turn yet.

I can accept he would be a bit of a bolter in the WC squad, but once again, Sodhi just hasn't been that good in the ODI format.
I hear what you're saying but the anti Tastle sentiment is largely based around the fact people just don't see him as having the tools to be a good Test player. And even though I smell it in the wind that he's going, I feel like he's a horrible pick for the World Cup. Nothing personal against the bloke he's a genuinely good one from all I hear. And is a very good domestic performer.

bummed we're not giving ferguson a run but I'm hoping it's just because of the injury risk so close to the world cup.
Tbh it's probably more likely because the current mob are statistically the best seam trio NZ has ever fielded, and the selectors aren't particularly interested in messing with that.

Are Will Young's and Matt Henry's seasons over already?

Who thinks they'll play another FC game this season, I'll bet on no.

Geez, surely they’ll be released from the squad.

It’ll be interesting to see how Wagner goes this series. I love him, but he has been a bit quiet recently ... I can see Ferguson starting to put a bit of pressure on him.

Also get the feeling this is a bit of a do or die series for Raval. It won’t be easy for him with not a lot of decent quality cricket this season. He might not get dropped if he doesn’t go well this series, but he’ll definitely be under a lot of pressure.

Just seen on the Blackcaps twitter that Henry and Young are going back to Plunket Shield.
I thought Plunket Shield started today as well, and every Tursday for rest of season. Same as day 1 of next few test etc.

But, good, I'm wrong

That effort with the bat vs. Nuttall/Sears the other day makes me think Bangladesh could surprise with the bat a bit here. They are missing Shakib and Mushfiqur, though.

Because teams never experiment with new picks against weaker teams in order to build bench strength

If we were playing test matches all the time, I think they'd rotate a bit more. We barely play anything though, so it's a bit harsh to have Wagner sit out since test cricket is his only international format.
