*Official* Bangladesh Tour of New Zealand 2019

U19 Captain
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat.

I can't think of any reason his numbers flatter.

Great player but I can.
He has played 3 world cups and generally saved his worst for those.
He really needs to have a good world cup or his odi stats won't really be that special. You can't fail at the biggest tournament 4 times and be an all time great odi player . ( hes a great by NZ standards regardless, I mean as a great player by world standards).
Really hope he does it though as I love Ross Taylor.

My world cup starting xi

Guptill
Munro (oh well hope he comes off sometime)
Kane
Ross
Nicholls
Latham
Neesham/CDG
Kluggelin
Sodhi
Fergusen
Boult

I just dont want santner there for his non existent batting hope. Feel sodhi could step up, santner just seems like a go through the motions player that never delivers under pressure- both bat and ball.
Kluggelin is a much better bet at 8 anyway.

Raval, Young, Watling, Astle, Henry all getting cricket under their belt this round of Plunket Shield. What is Wagner doing?

Played just 5 T20s in the last two months.

Surprised that Astle makes the squad. Have to think Santner will play and Astle is therefore only injury cover for Santner.

Disappointed no Ferguson.

Dunno, but I just noticed Milne was leading the NZ XI for the tour match.

Santner's not in the squad, Astle is the sole spinner.

So they don't think Santner is fit enough for test cricket, ok. But I'm astounded that Astle is considered the next best spinner over Ajaz and Somerville. The Canterbury mafia is in?

Speaking of Astle, amusing dismissal against Rance today.

That unbeaten 131 at the 2011 WC, where he smoked Ahktar, was pretty special. I thought he battled pretty well in the WC final to set a platform, but wasn't at his fre-flowing best (wonder if the eye issue was affecting him then).

I actually had a bit of a hunch Patel might miss out, as he didn't take a single at home v SL. But I thought they'd take a punt on Sommerville.

I am however an Astle fanboy, so I'm pretty delightedly surprised.

At times I've wanted Astle to be given a decent run too, based on his FC record, but I agree that if they didn't want to continue with Ajaz (debateable either way) then Somerville seemed a clearer option - has done more in his one test than Astle's done in his three. This just continues the tradition in the last few years of changing spinner every time the wind changes. Astle's injuries haven't helped with that either.

Probably won't get much of a bowl anyway, knowing Kaneh.

Astle is the incumbent ... he’s been injured ever since the first test against England last year where he had a really good match. So I expected him to be there ... although I’m a bit surprised Santner isn’t in the squad as well.

Further to those commentator’s squads, Jeremy Coney’s is:

Batsmen
Martin Guptill
Henry Nicholls
Kane Williamson (c)
Ross Taylor
Tom Latham
Will Young

Bowlers
Tim Southee
Trent Boult
Lockie Ferguson
Matt Henry
Ish Sodhi
Adam Milne

All-rounders
Jimmy Neesham
Mitchell Santner
Colin de Grandhomme

Best of the lot, I reckon.

Coney is always quality.

But I doubt they will pick anyone (i.e. Will Young) who hasn't turned out in ODIs this summer. You could make an exception for Adam Milne because he's coming back from yet another injury. Does Young bat in the middle order or is he an opener? You would have thought Taylor would have been given a rest for two ODIs whilst they tried out Will Young.

Young could play in either role, but like you say he isn't really in contention. Seifert will be the extra batsman/keeper and it sounds like they are taking Munro too.

Based on the way he bowled in the Super Smash elimination game and final and I hope Milne makes it.

Don't like this dithering on the spinner's slot. Ajaz hasn't set the world on fire post his Abu Dhabi debut, but give the guy a decent run please (though Astle could probably argue he needs the same gaving been in the mix even earlier). Either way I thought you'd be better off with a decent finger spinner playing in NZ.

I guess this means Astle is ahead of Sodhi in the World Cup selection race, and it feels like a funny sort of deadlock where Stead is determined to select him and Kane doesn't want to bowl him. I'll be pretty miffed if I were Sodhi, while he hasn't made the most of his chances he hasn't been a let down either like Munro; and would likely be more valuable than Astle if the conditions called for 2 spinners I imagine.

I like Jeremy and that might well be the most well-rounded squad, but we all know Munro is going and Young is not. They're not taking an uncapped international player to the World Cup when they had ample opportunity to play him. If someone got injured, maybe.

If I was Ish, I'd be shitting bricks that I'm not going. Not because I don't think he should, I think he absolutely should. He's very rarely been collared in his ODI career, he's a very effective middle order bowler. A proven one. Todd Astle is not proven. Nor is he an all-rounder of any note because he's of little value as a middle order/high lower order batsman. But Stead clearly has a boner for him, as evidenced by his ridiculous selection for the Test series. Somehow Astle is our #2 spinner by virtue of 4 wickets in 3 Tests, and a 3-for v England where he bowled a shower of **** in between a long hop caught at mid wicket, a #11 caught at mid on and one decent nut? Maybe it was his gritty 33 7 years ago on debut that got the nod.

Honestly, I've got nothing against the bloke. Todd Astle seems a nice guy. But he's not an international player, and if we look back in 10 years and say 'wow, he actually proved you wrong by being international quality' then honestly I'll not only eat my hat, but I'll also eat my house.
