Don't like this dithering on the spinner's slot. Ajaz hasn't set the world on fire post his Abu Dhabi debut, but give the guy a decent run please (though Astle could probably argue he needs the same gaving been in the mix even earlier). Either way I thought you'd be better off with a decent finger spinner playing in NZ.

I guess this means Astle is ahead of Sodhi in the World Cup selection race, and it feels like a funny sort of deadlock where Stead is determined to select him and Kane doesn't want to bowl him. I'll be pretty miffed if I were Sodhi, while he hasn't made the most of his chances he hasn't been a let down either like Munro; and would likely be more valuable than Astle if the conditions called for 2 spinners I imagine.
I'm not sure Ish hasn't made the most of his chances. He was absolutely outstanding at the first Mount ODI while the rest of the side was travelling distances. Against a quality batting line-up who play spin well on a flat one. He was also very good in that T20 series (save the last game). He does his job, which is to contain during the middle overs. Kane seems to have faith in him. He's not a wicket taker, so if we're judging him on that then that's unfair - we don't have anyone else who is an ODI wicket-taking spin option either.

How good would a possibles vs probables series be? There are several holes in the ODI team, and having Nicholl's and CDG filling them makes me pretty bleak about our WC chances.

Guptill, Nicholls, KW, RT, Latham, Neesham, CDG, Santner, Ferguson, Henry, Boult.

Munro, Young, Conway, Bruce, Mitchell, Seifert, Bracewell, Kuggs, Sodhi, Milne, Southee

Conway because probables would need him..

The possibles might go alright with the ball but I can't see that batting line-up managing to post anything.

FML Bennett still can't get a run!

i think they picked astle to maximise wicket taking for nz conditions.

ajaz is on par with tastle in domestix and santa is pretty meh in all levels of red ball cricket and all of astles rivals barring sodhi are finger spinners that are pretty worthless in modern nz conditions except to block up an end. sodhi himself isn't half the red ball bowler astle is, he's just younger and has a lot of unwarranted hype because he's good at t20s.

our team doesn't really need a containing spinner because cdg can do that plus be handy in the right conditions, all of our bowlers can bowl long spells too, and none are very expensive.

a wrist spinner is more likely to bowl a gem on a basin motorway to get rid of some annoying rearguard than santa or ajaz. no question he's less consistent than those guys, but i can see what they're going for and his last test was a perfectly fine performance despite kane vomiting at the thought of any leg spinner.

i really don't mind it as long as we rotate in the accurate finger spinners for the sri lankan tour to counter the obvious bunsen tactic.

edit - in say, 2 years i can envisage a certain opening batsman being the main spinner in nz conditions to block up an end and nz going with a specialist batsman ahead of cdg and four quicks.

3 Tests seems like such overkill. I just hope it isn't completely one-sided.

I don't get why there is so much anti-Tastle sentiment. He's the test incumbent, a position he pretty clearly earned. Patel and Somerville only got a couple of games because he was injured. Sodhi has had more of a go than anyone at test level and hasn't been up to scratch, hence Astle being in this position. We are complaining about someone who has earned his incumbency being selected when he hasn't even begun to have his turn yet.

I can accept he would be a bit of a bolter in the WC squad, but once again, Sodhi just hasn't been that good in the ODI format.

This is a bit of a myth that seems to have arisen, I think ... I reckon Sodhi has been very good in ODIs.

2017 season: 4 wickets at 26.25, 4.11 rpo
2017/18 season: 10 wickets at 25.20, 6.69 rpo
2018/19 season: 10 wickets at 37.00, 5.31 rpo (including the Indian series where nobody took any wickets, but he was the one that kept a lid on scoring)

I’ve got nothing against Astle getting another shot in the test team, as you say he’s the incumbent before his big injury run, but I’ll be shocked if he’s in the World Cup squad ahead of Sodhi.

I'm pro Astle in the test team.
Don't think he's done enough for the World Cup squad, though. It would be a hail mary. Where as I am quite comfortable with Sodhi in both white ball formats.
