Hahaha that’s a ridiculous knock in the circumstances!

I knew Wellington played West Indies there or something like that ... it was it Australia? In a warm up game. Weird to think about it now, I guess the big light tower wasn’t smack bang in the middle of the ground back then.
Probably were, I remember televised rugby league games from the Hutt Rec in about 1989 and the light towers were there.

What a win, someone should write a book about that one!

Actually, a book about that whole tour is a great idea. Nobody nick it please, I’m gonna look into it haha.
Fred Goodall apparently has a manuscript for a book but is unlikely to publish it.

He recounts the stories but doesn't want them appearing in print today for fear of re-opening all the old wounds.

He wrote 23 chapters for a book but pulled stumps on it in 1991 and now the manuscript sits in a drawer.
Goodall doesn't forgive easily. He's never wanted to make peace with the West Indies trio.

He remembers someone in the media trying to tee-up a reconciliation with Croft, when the latter returned to New Zealand as a radio commentator in 1990-2000.

"Somebody from the press came to my flat in Rintoul St in Newtown and I saw this guy coming up the stairs and I went to the door and said to the guy 'no I'm not talking to him. Goodbye.' I knew immediately what they were trying to do.

"I have crossed paths and shaken hands with the 1980's captain (Lloyd). He apologised to me at the top of stairs at the Basin. We quickly shook hands. It was, sort of, for a couple of watchers on."

How did you feel?

"All right."...
...
Border wasn't his most controversial call. That came years earlier at Hagley Oval when he gave Walter Hadlee out in a club game.

"The day I gave Walter Hadlee out on Hagley Oval the whole four matches all stopped.

"No umpire had the guts to give him out. I was a West Coaster. Ten minutes later was afternoon tea and all the umpires from all the games gathered together and I got lectured by them. 'You must be 100 percent certain'. I was 100 percent certain."

When you watch the interviews with him on youtube on that espn history of cricket documentary series he seems like a pretty interesting character, to say the least. Feel for him in that it’s probably the only thing he’s known for or asked about ... but some of his comments are pretty old school to say the least.

Yeah my question too... How many 19 year olds opened inning in domestic cricket over the years. Kippax will have an answer to this I guess, he has some magic access to cricket archive or something like that.
Josh Brodie was 20 when he opened for Wellington. There was a feeling he could've been a Test player too (scored a double ton v Auckland) but fell out of love with the game.

Geez, Wellington needing two wickets with four overs left ... Newton to Sodhi

Firebirds unlucky in the last game. They should have closed out on the 3rd day but for a dropped catch (Ish Sodhi), a very catch-able one gone between the keeper and the slip, then a very close stumping shout of Ravindra off the last over which Billy looked like lost and ruled it not out. If they won this, they'd have ended up 3rd and from there a good chance to go first with two games vs Canterbury and one vs Otago.

Milne rolled his ankle if anyone missed the article on stuff. Nothing serious but enough to stop him bowling anymore in the warm up game.

Ah gotta love the annual Guptill being in a totally different class in domestic FC cricket for a couple games.

The Hawke Cup game is as interesting as the Plunket Shield games. Leopard and Foxcroft turning out for Hawkes Bay. Nelson are captained by Luddick and have Clarkson, Felix Murray and the promising Zohrab brothers.
