Normally the top wicket taker table in Plunket Shield is dominated, maybe dominated is stretching it, very well represented by spinners. But not this year.

Sodhi has moved to second place, and Sommerville is 4th. But then way down to 18th place for the next spinner (jeets).

An outcome of the comp truncated to 8 rounds only?
Or that the usual suspects, Astle and Ajaz, have missed plenty of the summer with blackcap duties and/or injuies.

Sodhi has been outstanding this season. I think he is well and truly ahead of the rest of the spinners in the country. His batting has improved lots as well. Well and truly the time for him to be given a longer run in test matches. Hopefully the SL series after the world cup will be a good barometer.

Sodhi taking PS wickets is good, but I think his bowling was so unimpressive in the UAE that I'd have a hard time putting him back in the NZ test side. Plenty of competition for the spinner spot too.

ODIs and T20s a different story, happy for him to play in those.

Yeah that was so disappointing in the UAE, I was a big advocate of having him in the test team before that. Now I’d have to rate him behind Somerville and Patel, possibly even with Astle and even Santner.

Same. His test v England last year, then tour of UAE - has me pigeon holing him as a white ball bowler for now.

He's still young though.

Sodhi's taken quite a lot of wickets in the last couple of seasons, but the impression I've got from the video clips has been that he's really benefitted from NZ domestic batsmen playing spin poorly. I think the last game was a good example - from memory he picked up 4 in one innings, which looks good, but I then watched the dismissals and it was two full tosses, a long hop and a reverse sweep. He's still young and there's plenty of potential but is down the pecking order in tests for now.

This is probably the only time Blundell has spent some time in the middle since Sept. He barely played much cricket in the A tour to Dubai and for Black Caps. Very timely 100 for Tom. Still won't get a game in the near future :-)

Looking forward to seeing how Finn Allen goes... Excellent game this for him. Unlikely but not impossible, about 170+ runs with 5 wickets to go. He can be a hero today for Auckland.

He does get a lot simply by bowling loopy above the batsman's eyeline - that seems to cause confusion in domestic batsmen and/or lead to a mistimed slog. Didn't work against Pakistan.

This looks like a good and surprising win for Otago against Wellington. Match in the balance when they still needed 100 with five wickets left, but a big partnership between Nathan Smith (who just keeps scoring runs) and Viljoen.

Ah and Viljoen is out - still need 23 with 4 wickets left.

Wellington's bowling attack should be ashamed of letting this Otago side score ~300 both innings though, even if Otago have improved a bit by begging Kitchen and Wilson to come back.

Ten-fer for Bacon - doesn't look the most exciting bowler but can't argue with results I suppose.

That was terrible from firebirds. They have gone backwards this year. Barring the one day campaign they have been terrible in t20s and the 4 day format. I still think the selections have not been great and till the time they know how to nurture the younger talents there's no way out I feel. Patel's bowled nearly 60 overs to 21 of McPeake, 20 of Newton, 16 of Neesham and 12 of Ravindra, I have been following how many overs Patel is bowling and that is mind boggling. Nothing wrong with it when he's in great touch or bagging lots of wickets but he hasn't been as effective this season. He's coming off an elbow surgery as well so may have affected his bowling but still he's bowled as many overs as 4 bowlers put together. I really think it is time to move on from the older lot fully and get the younger lads in as long as there is quality in the younger lot.

Ravindra should be bowling way more than he's doing at the moment. So should McPeake and Neesham. What's the point in having so many bowlers in the line up and not using them.

I think Otago will go well in future, Nathan Smith is a real find. The lad can bat, bowl and field very well too. His bowling action is very smooth and repeatable. Slighly front on means he'll not struggle with injuries. His batting is way better than lower order. I think he's going to be like Jacob Oram but a better version of that.

Not sure what happened to Josh Finnie, he was like Nathan Smith. Was a decent offie, could bat and even lead the NZ U19s.
