ODI ATG XIs

Disappointed it took this long for someone to point that about regarding Warne. Murali is a far superior ODI bowler by such a huge margin. Picking Warne over him is dumb, especially since Warne did little with the bat in ODIs. Murali>Saqlain>>Warne.
People get touchy about such things here ;)

On averages alone, yes. One thing that hampers Warne is that he didn't have the luxury of being able to revert to bowling darts if need be. Being a leggie, he was more susceptible to being hit due to the necessity of flighting the ball.
On every metric. Warne was no McGrath in WCs to offset that.

One thing to remember about Warne, he played 5 knockout WC games and took 14 wickets @14.8 in them, while claiming 3 MOMs(a record perhaps?) across 2 semis and a final.

Like Gilchrist, crucial performances in important games can certainly bolster your reputation

I struggle to see how this serves as a defence for Warne.

That's pretty impressive actually. One thing I always noticed when watching Warne bowling in ODIs was that the batsmen would always sit up and pay attention whenever he was brought on to bowl. He piled on heaps of pressure to the opposing batsmen purely through his immense variety.

This is definitely an area where the "he gets too much credit because he played on a great team" actually is true. If Gilchrist hadn't played for Australia, he'd probably be known as a choker in world cups since his team wouldn't be good enough to carry him to the final every time with him not contributing much.

His best knocks came in the final each time yeah, but only in 99 was he crap during the tournament. In 03 and 07 he was decent.

Shane Warne came equal 1st for wickets in 99 and came equal 3rd in 96. And his game winning spell against SA has to be considered one of the greatest ever

Apart from the 3 finals, he played 28 games in the world cup and scored 6 fifties. 5 of 6 came against Bangladesh/Kenya/Netherlands/Zimbabwe. If Amla and Gilchrist switch nationalities, Gilchrist goes down as another South African choker who **** the bed on the biggest stage and Amla an undisputed odi ATG who won three world cups.

Can any spinner's spell be considered "one of the greatest ever" if it's against South Africa?

Warne gets too much credit for it, not too little. Anyone remembers Arvinda de Silva in 96 world cup? Like Warne in 99, he was MoM in both semi and final. I don't think his rating gets elevated above his career stats quite as much.

He got a fair amount of important starts, at least 3 scores over 40. But fair point on the opposition, I forgot he got all his group game runs against minnows in 07 actually.

Aravinda gets his due too, at least from me. But were talking bowlers here.
