Australian test selection 2018/19

Despite the thread title stephen was talking about the ODI squad. Nevill should definitely not warrant a mention.
If the selectors choose to relieve Paine of the Test captaincy at some stage down the line I'd be interested to see if Nev can sneak back into the side. Arguably the most competent gloveman currently on the scene.

Yeah Wade really needs to be in the team. I don't think he's that special but he did OK in the last stint he had in the team, whereas Paine and Carey are not OD batsmen.

Other than that though I think it's a good squad.

Carey and Khawaja are shockers. I wouldn't have them in Aus' 3rd XI. You just know they're both going to be in the top 3 of the starting XI though.

Our selectors are pure trash.

Khawaja needs to spend time in the Shield scoring long form runs. He's no chance of making the WC unless one or both of Smith and Warner don't return. I can imagine that his ton on a flat deck against a poor bowling attack has settled the selectors' minds.

The thing that confuses me quite a bit is the continued Carey-as-opener thing. Like, he ain't gonna be there for the WC when Warner and Finch have been locks for the whole cycle. Let him get used to 7, rather than bumping him back down at the last minute and getting very confused when he's not good at batting 7.

It's crazy that we're sticking with Carey and Khawaja in a World Cup year. Carey better not be batting in the top 6.

I hope he either starts scoring hundreds or makes 5 ducks in the next series. These piddling 30s just aren't what you need from a modern opener.

Is Finch really a lock for opening in ODIs in India though?

I mean, here's Australia's ODI opening stats since Finch debuted:

Nobody else has got a serious gig for six years. He's in pretty rubbish form, sure, but there hasn't exactly been a whole lot of work going into developing back-up openers. I'd be very, very cautious of dumping him a couple of months -- and, what, 10 ODIs -- out from a major tournament.

EDIT: Holy **** that is ugly table formatting

Yeah I thought he deserved a decent stint at the top to develop that third option. Definitely his strongest slot, too.

Yeah Head did ok there. I never really understood why people didn't like Head on ODIs. Very underrated cricketer.

It's obvious but Head's conversion rate is the problem. For a guy of his calibre, it's not even close to good enough.

Bloke's talented, though. One of those guys who has 10 shots for every ball but 7 are get-out shots. Reign it in even slightly and he's a weapon.
