Yeah I don't really agree, but your argument is perfectly fine if you think he's going to perform worse than the alternatives in more marginal cases where the difference between Southee and the next guy could make a big difference (Pakistan, England and Australia home and away, Sri Lanka away, India home etc).
It's more that my theory about southee is that he bowls his best after being dropped and having to earn his way back, which he hasn't had to do since 2014ish.

Hate to say it since outside of Santa he’s our best ODI bowler, but Boult has lost a bit of his edge in this format.

yeah he's got enough credit in the bank to last a good while, but it is worrying.
I’d still trust him to go cheaply but I’m not sitting here thinking he’s about to take a wicket either. If we can’t get form into our spearheads, we won’t stand a chance at the WC.

Since his Pakistan hattrick Boult has taken 4 wickets at 90.5, rpo 6.1.

He admittedly hasn't had the best luck, but his lack of wickets is starting to concern me a bit.

i've been banging on about it for a while, but our attack has plummetted in quality since 2015 wc where we had 2 world class bowling attacks

Good work you guys, needed that wicket.

Similar to Southee's form going into the last world cup, it wasn't SO compelling that we would be overjoyed with it, but it was good enough and there were enough other problems that he was number 1 seamer almost by default. Now Boult is number 1 by default. Probably fair to say the white ball hasn't swung as much for him in the years since his success in 2015 as well.

Yeah this sort of thing is way too psychological for my cricket tastes outside of memes, but it's not a fundamentally ekh argument like I thought it was originally.
