I'm usually the first guy to **** talk a slow Dhoni ODI innings, but I don't really mind this one tbh. When you come in 3 down in like 4 overs, with not the deepest of batting line ups you can't really be taking too many risks.

India did very well to get to where they were from 3 for nothing. Showing that they are easily the better team (of those selected) IMO, Aus got lucky with those 3 early ones

289 at the scg is plenty of runs, especially of the ball is not quite coming off the bat.

People have their ODI calibration set to Indian and English postage stamp grounds. Listening on the radio it definitely sounded like there was a bit in it for the bowlers.

If we can jag Rohit and Kohli early we become easy favourites.
Indeed.

300 is usually above par in Australia.

Well played Australia. Nice to have another win.

I don't get why Jadhav isn't in the XI and we're trying to get 2 overs of troll spin from Rayudu instead

Heading into the WC I hope we go with

Dhawan
Rohit
Virat
MSD (+)
Karthik
Jadhav
Pandya
Bhuvi
Kuldeep
Chahal/Shami/Khaleel/Umesh
Bumrah

I mean ideally we'd have Pandey at 4 and Pant in place of MSD, but since that's not going to happen this is probably our best shot at a winning combination. It's still basically Top 3 or bust, but maybe Jadhav/Pandey can pull something off here and then and if MSD is going to suck the momentum out of the innings we may as well have him up the order where it can pass as 'building a platform'. Plenty of bowling options, so I wouldn't play Jaddu, but we may need him for some batting depth. Bumrah and Kuldeep are locks, and ODIs may be Bhuvi's weaker format but he adds value with the new ball and has become our designated death bowler for some reason, so I'd keep him as well (plus batting depth).

If MSD bats 4, he bats in every game and sucks the momentum out of the innings 8/10 times. Rather hide him down the order where by the time it reaches him the game is good as done/he plays as little as possible.

This was acceptable in the first half of his innings. Didn't mind much with him scoring 10-12 runs in the first 40 balls. That was the right time for him to accelerate. Had he scored 70-80 by the time he got out, it would have been a good innings keeping the team in the chase. In the end, it turned out to be a pathetic innings without any clarity of vision.

Dhoni is clearly past his use by date with no fuel left in the tank. His inability to rotate the strike will hurt us badly in the world cup.

Our batting line up is very much top 3 or bust. Apart from the guy who just incurred a suspension,we have no one like Maxwell or Stoinis down the order to accelerate and turn a good total into a monumental one. Our best hope for the world cup is that one or two of Rohit, Shikhar or Virat bats right through the overs and makes a big one (and also hope Dhoni gets out under 10 balls if he gets to bat. He cannot be dropped from the eleven anyway).

Dhoni will play the world cup so I think 4 is the position he will be less awful in, ideally lower down the order you have some ballers to go hard.

I dunno..

Rohit-Dhawan-Kohli- Dhoni. Jadhav-Pant-Pandya...... Then 4 bowlers.

I see people online speculating about IPL players, that is pointless, India are conservative when it comes to ODI selection.

I am inclined to think opening him will be where he is least awful. He may not last long to impact team adversely there. But that is not going to happen. Also, moving Rohit or Dhawan out of their natural position may not be a good idea.

Cant touch that top 3 whatsoever. Rohit is a beast in this format, while Dhawan has a great record in knock out ODI competitions. Its not ideal, but if Dhoni must play its 4. I loath the idea of him at the crease in the last 5-10 overs stinking it out.

Yep. I am not advocating opening him. I wouldn't bat him at #4 either if the team is 200/2 after 35 overs on a really flat track. May have to float him around here and there based on match situation. How ironical that he would be the first man in every one's wish list 10 years back to capitalize on a solid start.

Rohit, Dhwana, Kholi, Rayudu, Dhoni, Jadeja indian odi batting looks thin. If the other team can get big fishes Rohit and Kholi out early Indian would be in trouble

If you want to shove all of Khawaja, Marsh, Handscomb, Stoinis and Maxwell in the team there isn't really any other choice.
you just bat him at 7 and you open with Usman or Marsh or Maxwell or Handscomb or Stoinis...? Like, he only opens because he's a keeper and he's had the "keeper bats at 7 or opens" thing apply to him. He's not actually uniquely qualified for the job. anyone could do it.

Is there any chance that if India field first, Pant takes the gloves instead of Dhoni?
