Apparently Sydney and Melbourne CBD feel like Singapore.

I met loads of mainland Chinese in southern California last year (had gone for Coachella) - they all lived nearby in houses their parents had bought.

Mate, should come to West Footscray (aka Little India). We have about 10 Dosa huts & Indian barbershops within a 3 block diameter.

Not saying that. Just noting the increased purchasing power of the Chinese. CBD apartments are pricey. If they can afford that, they come from money.

Competition isn't with Chinese. It's with native Australians.

What happened with the Chinese is that they had massive economic growth for 30-40 years (still ongoing) so an extremely rich class was formed. Now thing is China has so many people it's still a middle income country so the quality of life is not as good as a first world country. But since it has such a huge population the 1% is also huge (14-15 million which is like 70% of the entire Aus population). Because they want to enjoy good schools/colleges for their kids and better living conditions they are simply buying real estate over the world in cash and the normal mortgage paying average native citizens just cannot compete.

Same thing will happen with India (already begun actually). Will keep on picking steam and be where the Chinese are in 15 years (The Chinese will be way way ahead then).

You think one group of noveau riche people buying up real estate, driving expensive sports cars/brands, displaying bad behavior as tourists was bad? Well now you'll have two.

We love selling our real estate at inflated prices to our badly behaved guests. Then buying it back when the bottom falls out. First the Japanese now the Chinese. Was genuinely concerned where the next suckers were coming from. Want a brochure?

I think the highest proportion of tourists from one country I’ve seen anywhere was Hawaii. Incredible amount of Japanese tourists there compared with any other group.

Japan cannot be compared with China and India. Japan at the end of the day is a country of just 100 million. By the time their economy had bust they were a first world country and had overtaken the americans in per capita income.

China has still got 20-30 years left to grow, India 40-50 more. China still has a per capita less than $10000. If China and India had Japan levels of income prior to the bust they could buy all the real estate in Australia 20-25 times over.

Luckily for us there's nothing to see down here. Sydney on the other hand has an abundance of that materialistic touristy stuff. I can imagine Indian families getting their photo taken out the front of Burgey's house whilst on holiday. Huge draw cards up there.
