this is nowhere near as embarrassing as the mcg and sydney tests in 2010-11. and yet consider what that same pace attack (mostly) would do a few years later to exactly the same batting lineup
I dunno, this Test feels more embarrassing than the SCG 2011 Test. Much better attack this time around, for one.

one, really

yeah but none of those complaints are really about this series. this is obviously the result of those long-term failings, but if roll india for 250 here then it doesn't change any of those things.
I was weighing in on the discussion if Australia are on a West Indies-esque downward spiral.

WI cricket collapsed because of long term failings at various levels. I think comparing Australia to that, while maybe premature, is fair.

It wasn't that long ago that they were still winning handily, and the result here could be quite different if Smith/Warner were picked and Aus won a toss or two. This wouldn't really be a conversation point in that situation.

moronically banning your 2 best players for a year for a minor indiscretion (both NSW boys too) can't have helped

yeah, bloody soccer is probably more popular in Australia now. It's disgusting.
tbf liverpool vs man city this morning was quality

Yep. To have the BBL on while a somewhat marquee Test series reaches its climax shows where the Australian cricketing fraternity's priorities lie.
I'd be curious to see the relative ratings, even keeping in mind how much the Test ratings will be propped up by expat Indians

and plus, we shouldn't look with false nostalgia at the "good old days" and pretend that the reams of talent coming out of aus cricket in the 90s and early 00s was the result of flawless, incredible structures rather than an extreme glut of talent. certainly there are things that really need to be fixed (pitches and pathways, primarily), but there'll always be those.

why? it's highly likely. they were exhausted before a ball was even bowled here.
Because that is such a bullshit excuse. It may be a fair excuse, but it highlights the cruelty of test cricket in that a toss can make so much difference.

The party line seems to be "we're a young team", but Paine, S Marsh, Lyon, Finch and Khawaja are all over 30, Starc, M Marsh and Hazlewood are nearing 30 and other than Cummins and Head, the other guys are all over 25.

They're young compared to Australia in the 06/07 Ashes but they're not particularly young.

That’s CA doing like most things

Most keen followers recognise the damage that is being done to the game here and have observed how the ruling body has ignored all the warnings

I mean there's some parallels, but I think the situation in the West Indies was exaggerated by the infighting between different boards, and I feel like CA's relationship with players is better (if still poor). And I feel like the Australian media being quite reactionary helps in some ways (if being full of Helen Lovejoy types hurts in others).

I'm with this. There may be things that can be done to help along the players, but good players don't need systems. They make themselves good. We are just in an era of absence at the moment. It will turn around. I just don't want to have to wait another 10 years.

yup. And Indian cricket still has a ton of problems, we just aren't talking about them now because we're en route to smash Australia 3-1 in Australia.
