He’s right tbf. You can’t get a flatter deck to bat on than this and it’s been ****ing terrible cricket.
He has a point. These are pretty benign conditions and if there is a time to dominate it is before the new ball.
I don't really have much time for the strike rate/run rate brigade anymore. They only seem to consider the current scenario and pitch when making these claims and fails to take into consideration the broader context which in this case would include not just what has happened in this series so far from India's perspective but their overall Away season starting with South Africa.

India's batting has been below par throughout, susceptible to collapses. In the previous match, at one point Kohli and Rahane looked like taking the game away, and one dismissal and it's 1-1.

People ripped into Babar and Haris in the second Test against New Zealand for their strike rate when it followed a match where they failed to chase down 175 and collapsed from 140/3

Cricketers might say in press conferences that they start with a clean slate in a new match but it's not humanly possible. Collapses leave scars on your mind and it makes you cautious.

Whether consciously or not, it would be playing on both Kohli and Pujara's minds that one wicket here could bring Australia back in the match like last time or several times in England and South Africa.

Well that’s great mate. If they bat at this rate they can declare at tea day two on 390 and won’t have succeeded in doing a thing towards winning a series here for the first time.

Scoring runs at a good clip is important. The whole concept of building pressure as a bowler comes from stopping free flow of runs. Otherwise a team full.of Chris tavares batting at a strike rate of 19 would be the optimum way to bat regardless of condition because you 'might' collapse by playing shots.

These guys are just setting up the platform for the 10rpo Pant/Shami partnership

I doubt any Indian fan is going to mind or look this gift horse in the mouth after the recent horrors. Scoring will inevitably pick up tomorrow and this will be looked at as an important Day 1. Just have to survive these last few overs.

I fell asleep for an hour, just woke up and saw that in that time all that's happened is 50 odd runs.

I also see that Pujara and Kohli are still batting, as they are 90% off the time I watch India bat.

Feel like our guys have made this pitch look worse than it is tbh. If we bat until tea tomorrow, I really like our chances. Days 2-3 are going to be very hot apparently.
