Just thinking about how Rhodes debuted in the 1890s and was a link to the previous century going into 3 more decades.

Couple of thoughts

Jennings fitness was impressive. Right at the end of his knock with Foakes and they were sprinting quick twos. I think those are the kind of 1% that probably get you that final spot on the tour when it's close. He also apparently tends to rate excellently on the personality and leadership tests they put you through at loughborough.

Leach's contribution pretty massive this game. Not just what he did but how it allowed the rest of the attack to prosper. Allowed Moeen to bowl more concentrated at the left handers and Moeen didn't have to bowl long containing spells (because Leach did it) as he would if he was with just Rashid. Ali could be a big benefactor from Leach's inclusion. Rashid too wasn't overbowled as a result.

On Moeen I thought it was good to see him moving to around the wicket to right handers occasionally without prompting. I think in the past he's been very reluctant and uncomfortable bowling around to the right handers. Definitely adds to his game especially when it's turning a lot or the opposition are sweeping a lot, or even just subtle variation. He seems now more than ever to have a gameplan and understanding in how to take wickets in Asian conditions - in the past it's just been fire the ball in with no real plan. I think Saqlain is out with them as spin bowling coach which probably helps.

Yeah, i see Dobell noted Moeen went past John Emburey wickets wise. What a career he has carved out for himself. Streets ahead of JE with the bat as well.

For me it is Curran or Rashid who miss out for YJB depending on the conditions. Rash is so good against tailenders which we are **** against so that tilts it to him for me

I wouldn’t have picked six bowlers for the first test, and I’d move Moeen down the order if it were up to me, but I don’t see them changing the basic game plan after a win.

Most they will do is try changing the batting order I think.

It's slightly unconventional, but I'll go with:

Jennings
Burns
Buttler
Root
Stokes
Bairstow
Moeen
Foakes
Curran
Leach
Anderson

I'd go with that too, at least Buttler has a technique to fall back on. Moeen plays the same way be it at 3 or 8 and is way too loose.

That is of course presuming Bairstow is returning to the side.

bairstow averages 26 in 10 matches this year.

why the clamour to bring him back?

his gains in limited overs have messed up his test technique. he stays so leg side to everything now and looks too loose.

I'm wondering if sticking him at 3 is a good idea. Looked solid but it was one innings.

Stick with Foakes. Where does he bat domestically?
Varies depending on who's available for Surrey. Usually number 6 at county level, but has batted a bit higher if some top order batsmen have been injured on or test call up. Which potentially translates into 7 at test level imo.

I'm not keen to moving up to number 3 because he made runs at number 7. At least Moeen bats at 3 for his county, even if there wasn't much evidence of that at Galle.

I think I'd probably just bat Root there. I'd sooner have a crack with Buttler or Bairstow than go with Moeen again, but yeah Curran and Foakes are bad ideas.

Well he played 2 tests with a broken finger and scored nothing, still one of our best/most important players. Has more in the bank than many of the rest of the team.

Personally wouldn't pick him as he had no cricket for 3/4 weeks so would leave him out till the Windies tour.

So our press all seem adamant that Bairstow is back in and it seems to be for Curran or Rashid. I wouldn't pick him.

Really hard to nail a team down for pallekelle I know Barstow has been averaging low and honestly I wouldn't pick him let him improve and focus on Odis I think the safest bet is batting pope I know he's a number 5 but he is a class player and it can't hurt to try him therecso essentially burns Jennings pope root stokes Buttler fakes curran Rashid leach Anderson (id would like to see stone in for leach/rashid)
