This may have already been said but Bairstow breaking his finger might not be the worst thing for the team long term.

Buttler at 7 as a bat is not a long term solution. He isn't really good enough to play as a batsman. Him as keeper at 7 or 8 is a suggestion I can swallow - maybe even as captain in the long term. So if Buttler goes well as keeper in the next few weeks, Bairstow may be forced into playing as a batsman when he comes back. I don't really think Bairstow is good enough to bat 4 or 5 but some people do. Anyway whatever happens now the situation will likely resolve itself - whereas pre injury we were kinda stuck in a team model that wasn't sustainable.

I don't disagree with that and have thought that Bairstow could work well as an opener long term if he was freed of the keeping gloves.

As an aside, the Worcs number 3 is playing himself into a bit of form at Scarborough currently, you never know....:laugh:

I'm not convinced he's good enough to be batting 4 or 5 either, but I do think there is some worth in trying him as a specialist batsmen at somepoint. Has he had any previous experience with captaincy?

If Kohli keeps this up he can better the ridiculous 2016 he had.

Already averages 120+ in ODIs for the year and 65 in Tests including runs in tough conditions. Not been half as good in T20s/T20Is though but who cares.

Is it just me or does any other indian fan look forward to watching our guys bowl rather than bat these days?

Bairstow- No I don't think so. I also think it was quite damning that he wasn't even considered when they appointed Root given the lack of other alternatives.

Why are India not playing Axar Patel. Guy is a Durham legend and he is only mid-way through his first match!

Just because it's on record that he feels keeping imrpoves his batting due to the higher level of job security, which is something giving him the captaincy would provide if we're taking the gloves off him.

Latest comment in the Guardian commentary:

“Dear Rob,” says Robert Wilson. “Given Kohli’s one-man mission to destroy all hope and faith, I’ve got a notion for how to stop him. Am I the only one to sense something inexorably anti-Englishabout this cavalier crushing of a nation’s dreams? His grinding run-greed is faintly supremacist. His two hundreds per week dominance smacks of intolerance. And hey, lest you think that trying to get some random accusations of prejudice sounds pretty desperate, can I point out two things? First, work with what you got and secondly, nothing else seems to be working. Plus, we all know that being really, really good is tantamount to cheating.”

In the context of modern Test batsmanship, Kohli’s discipline, patience and technical excellence surely bring the game into disrepute. Two-year ban please!"

Beware, India, for the next two tests! Anderson has exhausted his entire quota of bad luck for the series in this one game.
