England are a very one-dimensional side. Good when the ball swings. However, their batting is poor and particularly brainless. Their bowling attack is one dimensional. Nobody quick, no mystery spin in fact no spinner who can successfully hold up an end. This doesn't win you many test matches, particularly out of home.
When England travel, they lose 2, 3, 4 or 5 - 0. When teams come to England they can usually get a win or maybe two.
Something does need to change and it's a problem that isn't just done with the odd change. I think now is the time for Ed Smith to shine, he's clearly a very intelligent man.
Two new openers, a new captain. Decide who is the best keeper and where is Bairstow going to play the best. He surely cannot bat this high with such top order frailties since he does like a big drive. Curran should play, he looks like a good cricketer. Decide who the best spinner is in county cricket. Decide who the best captain and leader is in county cricket. Root is no leader, he is shy and resembles a little school boy. He gets salty when he gets out and is incapable of making 100s, that cannot inspire the troops. Stokes probably isn't good enough to bat in top 5 either on recent form. Pope is clearly batting too high.
England are trying to make a middle order of 4-7 out of players who should be batting 6 or 7. Clarke could come in, therefore as a name that springs to mind. As for an opener, well at this stage anyone will do. I've heard that possible Jamie Overton or Olly Stone could be quick? Last time I heard someone say an English bowler was quick though was Mark Wood, and hahaha.
