Openers XI
Sir Jack Hobbs
Sir Len Hutton
Sunil Gavaskar
Herbet Sutcliffe
Gordon Greenidge
Matthew Hayden (no I don't think he is the 6th best opener but he would be able to feast on the spin and tired pace bowlers at this position)
Syed Kirimani (he did open if I'm not wrong, handy enough with the bat, brilliant behind the stumps)/ Adam Gilchrist if choosing him is not cheating
Imran Khan (opened the bowling)
Malcolm Marshall
Sydney Barnes
Glenn McGrath

Just don’t think its worth having May or anyone else in that position in the side when those 3 openers and Hammond are so clearly ahead of them as batsmen. I have no doubt they’d be able to adapt to coming in at first drop, so I feel its worthwhile to include them rather than a clearly inferior batsman.

I've always considered May to be part of the upmost echelon of English middle-order batsmen. Not sure if including an out of position Sutcliffe ahead of him is such an open & shut case.

Calling May "clearly inferior" is silly, he is an absolute ATG #4 batsman. At #4 he averages more than all other English contenders, apart from Barrington, whose average there is only 1 run higher. Those other contenders include Compton, KP, Root, Cowdrey...

May was a brilliant batsman, equally adept against pace or spin. I'd much rather this line up than batting an opener out of position simply because he had a better overall career average.

I always forget SF Barnes, he'd probably slot in ahead of Bedser, but I'm happy either way.

Switch Kallis and Pollock. Plus, no Peter in for Shaun?
Kallis batted at #3 for 78 innings, while G.Pollock never batted at #3 in tests.

Procter for S. Pollock?
Happy with either tbh, but Pollock's longevity gets rewarded today, and I reckon Pollock balances the attack better than Procter with Donald and Steyn already there. Pollock can bowl long containing spells while the other two bowl express short spells.

I bet this team would score 500+ and bowl the opposition for below 200 more often than not.
