Baggy Green ball tampering: Bancroft, Smith and the Aussie "Leadership Group"

SeamUp

International Coach
He will play for Australia again in my opinion.

Cameron Bancroft
@cbancroft4
Today I lodged the paperwork with Cricket Australia and will be accepting the sanction handed down. I would love to put this behind me and will do whatever it takes to earn back the trust of the Australian public. Thank you to all those who have sent messages of support

It is hilarious that the two twittering little bitchy girls from that Bairstow headbutt press conference are two of the sandpaper cheats - or should I say, ''leadership group'' haha.

What comes around goes around Messrs Bancroft and Smith.

That press conference was like watching two toddlers in a playground s******ing about some other kid.

Think Smith should have appealed against the full domedtic ban. Would be a boon for the SS to have him playing.

I'm sure that he would have received very good (and very expensive) legal advice about what would be best course of action for him.
Distancing himself from the ACA might actually be a good idea; the mandarins at CA may now look upon his case in a more favourable light.

That would be New South Wales winning your Shield if Smith and Warner were allowed to play domestic. The boards have reciprocal agreements apparently but if the domestic ban was rescinded they could play county cricket also.

I think people overplayed Smith's role in the pay dispute; while he took the ACA line he wasn't that public about it and actually took quite a while to say anything about it on his own. It was Warner, Starc and the domestic/female players who were vocal about it, although Warner got most of the attention.

If Smith and Warner were allowed to play for NSW their selectors would probably compensate by picking 7 bowlers

NSW would find a way to stuff it up. Them playing a full SS season would be good for NSW and the other teams who would get to test themselves against our 2 best bats. Maybe there an argument about bad optics but I don't care.

I remember Brearley putting all 10 fielders including the keeper on the boundary in an ODI vs the Windies in the Australian summer of 79/80. Masterful captaincy and well within the rules was the consensus of the Pommy commentators and pundits at the time.
Actually the view of the British media was that, whilst in was perfectly within the Laws and regulations it was not really the done thing. There were immediate suggestions from within English cricketing circles that it shouldn't happen.

It'd certainly be one of the few times you might actually see a crowd at a Shield game if it's the only chance you'll get to watch them.

It'll be absolutely absurd if Warner appeals and is successful in having his ban reduced to six months or even less.

When the ball tampering news broke I couldn't believe it and was immediately angry with the players. That lasted a good 3 days or so.

By the time the bans were handed down I felt they were excessive. Now I think 12 months is utterly absurd for Smith. Turning a blind eye is not the same as masterminding or committing the action and even if it is the offense committed is relatively small in the grand scheme of things. Of all the ways you can cheat, ball tampering is the most ineffective and requires the most skill to achieve. You're better off spiking a drink or strategically placing some marbles for a player to slip on or doing any number of underhanded things on the field. Ball tampering is pretty low impact all things considered.

I agree the suspensions are too harsh, but at the end of the day it’s still cheating. Losing the captaincy in circumstances like this is a massive deal in Australia. In terms of punishment it’s worth nearly a year’s worth of cricket alone imo. We aren’t like England or the other lesser cricketing nations who have revolving door skippers. It’s not usually the Australian way.

WSC years aside, I think Smith is the first Australian skipper to be dumped by the Board since Lawry. The rest have either resigned or retired of their own volition.

The closest I can remember to a skipper being booted in my time watching was, scandalously, TOTAB basically having time called on his career after the SA tour in 94. Bloke should have had a place reserved for him in the team for eternity.

The issues that I have with the suspensions are that they are banned from playing at all (sorry but grade is no better than nets for these guys)

If they had simply left it to 5 tests plus stripping of leadership roles (and maybe chuck in some odis), I dont think that anyone could have cause for complaint

I think there is is a fair chance that these sanctions would be reduced.
