There is another possibility which somehow Aussie supporters have not countenanced and which to us is very, very plausible. It is that Harby said a cuss word in Hindi language ("maa ki") which to Symonds et. al. who don't know Hindi sounded like "monkey". So neither was Harby racist nor Symonds a liar. Very plausible.

Wouldn't surprise me. I just find it crazy that of all the issues from that series like ball tampering, delaying tactics etc., it's what is at best a stupid misunderstanding, and at worst a harmless little insult, that everyone remembers and goes on about
No I'm not saying he was lying but there's no solid evidence, like here, to back him up. So even if Harbhajan said maa ki, which is plausible, I'd still give him the equivalent of today's 1 match ban. If it was proven beyond reasonable doubt, then banning him for life wouldn't have been inappropriate IMO. This is why DRSgate is such a watershed moment as well, as it brings so many of their recent victories into question.

That’s the difference between the greats and *****. He’s a posting sky rocket - you get a bit of a show at the start then a burnt out stick falls back to earth. Ive tried hard but haven't been able to keep up with all the posts accross the various threads.Man, I've never seen CW this busy in a long time. We should have had a subforum for all this TBH. The "maa ki" thing sounds like a silly coverup. Unless you're Indian you won't really understand how plausible it actually is that Bhajji said that and not "monkey". It's a ridiculously common insult to throw around, particularly where harbhajan is from. There's a slight "n" sound in there too in the pronunciation which would make it sound a lot like "monkey" to a non-Indian. If someone actually came up with that as an excuse for harbhajan it's genius. More likely is that it's the truth.

Tbf, most India series have been controversy free... Ind-NZ, Ind-Eng, Ind-SA recently were relatively mild mannered series. The only ill tempered one was... surprise surprise against Aus. Before that, the home SA series in 2015 was a bit feisty but it was because of the pitches, so atleast it was a cricketing issue and not rubbish like in this series... and even then, there wasn't much going on between the players, it was just fans on both sides going at it on social media.

From what I remember (correct me if I am wrong) there was a look of fear on Harby's face right after he uttered the word and Aussies took offence on the field. Wouldn't have happened if he intended to use racial slur.

It was more one of confusion I think.
Harbhajan's a despicable person and I wouldn't put it past him to do it. I just don't think he did in that instance.

Think he was referring to 2016 India v England.
Though even Australian series before the recent India one were relatively uncontroversial and at least much of the stuff was related to the cricket rather than cricket-related controversies. Less so the case of the recent India series and the last Ashes, and this one blows everything out of the water.
