We should go even further back imo.

None of this would have happened if Britain didn't start invading countries. Maybe we should start a thread on their atrocities from causing famines to stealing the kohinoor and giving the world Graeme Swann.
What would India do if Britain never gave them cricket? Obsess about some other sport? Become a country-wide utopian metropolis that dominates the world? Who knows

If Britain never gave us cricket, we would still beat their ass at it. Much like other countries and soccer.

Britain didn't spread soccer throughout the world and other countries still beat them. If cricket had eventually got here by other means, we would eventually dominate them then too. at home

We absolutely did. It's why Argentinian teams are called River Plate and Boca Juniors not Rio Plate and Boca Jóvenes.

With Burgey on this one.. If Harsh has the right to bring up Border's rubbishness (which he has) then an Australian supporter also has the right to bring up Sunny's dark side

And let's not pretend Sunny is a regular Indian who didn't have any clue that he was being racist. This is an ex-Indian captain writing his autobiography. He's no Yo Yo Honey Singh or Kamaal Rashid Khan. He obviously knew.

We invaded with the sole intention of spreading cricket around the world....it may have been harsh I admit, but.... I mean.. .........We have got mainly **** all out of it...

Pure altruism in my book..............

Perhaps I'm a little too 'green' on this forum still, but I don't think either were being racist.

AB - just disgusting and distasteful.

Gavaskar - sounds like he's just trying to call them barbarians - I don't think his message has racist undertones, it just 'sounds' bizarrely phrased if that makes sense. Conversely, would you have said what he said was 'racist' if he had said the same regarding the (largely) white Australian crowd who chanted "Lillee. Lillee. Lillee. Kill. Kill. Kill"?

In India, we use words like 'bandar' (monkey) and 'jungli' (barbarian) without meaning anything especially mean by it. Of course, Gavaskar is an educated man and should know how contexts change across continents, especially when you use those terms to describe a previously enslaved people who were in fact subjugated on the pretext that they were less than human. Shame on him.

You do realize that even if there is a hint of racism in there then people will perceive it as racist right? Irrespective of what point Gavaskar was trying to make.
Yes but there is a difference between a racist comment and a racist person. Also, understanding helps move things forward in this regard.

Well said. We needed a face poster from Hong Kong. About time.

The sad thing is Britain even invented twenty20! It would be much easier to swallow the horrors of the IPL if twenty20 was something the Indians conjured up specific for the competition; we then could just ''blame India''. Sadly we invented this format as another county limited over format sometime in 2003, and now it has spread and destroyed human civilization.

Sorry about that.
