That selection sucked for everyone, really. Even Cartwright suffered from it because now lots of people are writing him off as a Test player - a format his game is much more developed in.
It was good news for the next person in line for a Test call up

Also good for the above person's friends and family, as well as any enemies that Cartwright may have had.

It was also great for India, who were guaranteed an early wicket in the first two games.

And now that Stoinis is averaging 100 in ODIs, and Joe Public thinks Cartwright is useless...

Problem with Cartwright and Maxwell is both are very average bowlers, so why not pick the next best batsman for the #6 spot in tests. Stoinis is an average batsman in first class cricket as well, like Marsh. I'd rather see Patterson or Head get a crack at #6.

Thing is, I reckon there's a case they are the 6th and 7th best batsman in Australia. So they are picking the next best batsman. Their FC record is better than Head's, for example.

Cartwright literally averages over 50 in First Class cricket. He's only played about 25 games so that could go down pretty quickly if he ran into a rough patch, but it's certainly not silly to suggest he's the next best batsman available.

This feels like one of those "Jadeja has 3 300s in FC Cricket" style stats after watching him bat tbh

Well I mean he sucks in one day cricket domestically too and isn't used to opening either, so him sucking here was entirely predictable. If he looked like Chris Martin I wouldn't have been surprised.

He's looked okay in his two Tests IMO. He really sucks against spin at the moment but he looks really good against the quicks FC setting.

He might be one of the six batsmen available, or he might not be. But either way he's in the argument, and one shouldn't assume that just because he can bowl (well, kinda..) that it's actually a factor in his selection and that there must automatically be someone better.

It's, like, inverse Wicketkeeper/England Spinner Syndrome -- "because he has a secondary skill he must be worse at the primary one than a specialist".

Never seems to be applied to Head though.

Probably because, try and Smith might, people just don't buy that Head is actually an allrounder. Cartwright is an "allrounder" and Head is a "batsman", in the minds of Joe Public.

Cartwright's performances should definitely put him in the conversation, sure, but Head's just a better bat too. Forget Cartwright's average for a moment, even Watto averaged 50+ in FC cricket and he's in a similar bucket. Without checking too hard, I'm guessing plenty of his FC runs have come on the faster, straighter decks so being in Perth would probably one of the better places to support his game.

Just gotta look at them bat to see that Head is, technically, a tougher proposition for bowlers. Undone by his aggression at the moment but if he pares it back a bit, he'll be a Test regular. Cartwright will not, he's a more limited bat who's in form, for mine.

How horrific is Jadhav’s action. An asthetic nightmare.

First look at the other spinner. And look, he’s not good.
