One thing that the declaration does do is give England the chance to make real use of the second new ball if they need it.

Which they might well do judging by this opening burst. Bit disappointing.

This pitch has looked easier and easier to bat on as the game's gone on.

Nah... the pressure is real... all you can do as a batsmen is survive, but a wicket or 2 for the fielding side is huge. No wicket taken does not change anything for the fielding or batting side.
Atherton was only saying recently he quite liked it when he was playing, bowlers often over-strained and you often got off to a flyer.

It's horses for courses though, and I just don't see the point here as wickets have often gone early in the day, and with cloud cover to come, I'd have preferred the 40 runs or so, and be able to be more attacking.

Probably won't change the result, so I won't probably discuss it beyond this match, well hopefully.

I wouldn't be too surprised if he is a bit complacent when playing the Windies, but fired up during the Ashes.
He's not bowled that well for awhile though, still can't drop him, we all know what he can do when on, and he frequently goes through blips, but they normally coincide with him being not fit, he's been pretty poor even in county cricket.

Tbh it just feels a bit silly declaring on a total you should win with when you were 170 behind and with a full day left.

At least they didn't score some quick runs, but yeah this looks a needlessly funky declaration when we'd done so well to get back ahead of the game.

I'd have declared overnight. Think the extra 30-40 we would have scored might prove vital. Pitch is flat for quicks.
Yep, if we'd survived that long, means we get the 2 extra overs in the play.

In the end, it could have worked, Jimmeh bowled a few dangerous balls and Moeen could have had one

Yeah after being so far behind you make sure you don't lose first then try to win. This is a very dangled carrot if WI bat well.

To be honest it's a word I keep going back to with this England side; Arrogance.

They think they are much better than they actually are.

My worry with Root is he may become one of those horrible captains that try to look good in the media, hence keeping having his side attack and these type of things, all Beffy-approved, which let's remember Beefy was a terrible captain.

Early days yet though.

It's a very similar declaration to the one Australia made at Headingley when they lost to Mark Butcher's 170 odd on the last day. Although they already had the series won.

Yeah that's the problem with this declaration, one player can win the game for them doesn't need a proper team effort.

Again, it doesn't 'work' if England take a wicket, because they can take wickets just the same bowling tomorrow. That's why people get a massively inflated view of giving the opposition 'a tricky few overs at the end'.

The point of it is if giving the opposition a few overs at the end of the day actually makes a significant difference to the expected outcome. I doubt it makes much difference, but I can't be bothered looking through a ton of examples.

I wouldn't call it arrogance, I'd call it confidence. England really should and probably are going to win from here. Decent effort by the WI but as so often happens in our sport, crucial drops (esp root and stokes) cost them this match. No shame in losing 3-0 to England away, after all Eng did just squash the best traveling team in cricket (RSA).

I'm really not bothered in getting in an argument with you, when we broadly agree, I wouldn't have done it either.

Perhaps I should have said "looked to have worked", I think it's a bad decision myself, as I've mentioned about 4 times.
