Why do captains always underbowl their own part time pies though? Sachin did it. So did SWaugh. He used to bowl many overs in the beginning of his career. Becomes captain and stops bowling. Smith never bowls himself. Border was different. Gave himself some overs in the middle.
The great man got it

Realistically Smith will need to bat long and hope that one of the other right-handers (Maxwell, Handscomb, Cummins?) can stick around with him.

The draw is certainly not off the cards, here.

Of the current lot Williamson could probably give himself a few more overs than he does, since his bowling record is actually sort of respectable. On the other hand, though, you've got Mathews who gives himself the new ball.

Off the top of my head I can't think of any recent captains who did much bowling (though I'm probably missing some obvious ones). Clarke I guess would have if his back had been better, and I wouldn't be surprised if Root isn't shy about giving himself an over or two.

If Kohli is gonna bat like this, he might as well start bowling to compensate, but the **** injured his shoulder so even that isn't possible. wac.

80 overs.

Nothing else really matters. Just get to the 2nd new ball and it's a draw. 75 overs probably leaves enough time for India to T20 bash out a win. Slow the game down, make sure India don't bowl more than 90 in the day which means there is only 88 overs in the match if they need to bat again.

Jadeja will be the be threat, but play him out, score a bit quicker at the other end, and don't go chasing anything you don't need to. Ones to rotate and long hops to the fence. Everything else dead bat or through to the keeper.

India will get in 95 minimum.

But it probably won't matter because even if they have to chase a small total, Australia have all the freedom to slow things down at the end.

That's like compensating for breaking someone's windshield by burning the whole car down. He's one of the worst part time bowlers I've ever seen over a decent sample size.

The real issue with him injuring his shoulder is that it's given him an excuse to field at slip and drop a couple more simple catches that he'll make look incredibly difficult.

The thing with Kohli's bowling is not as much about effectiveness as it is about how he looks while he's bowling. Calling it ugly will be generous. He knows it'll be difficult to make eye-contact with the opposition let alone sledge them once they've seen him bowl a few, and might be the reason he's not done it ever recently.

Not if Australia don't want them to they won't. New gloves, adjusting shoes and pads, a bit of gardening, long chats at the change of ends, pulling away and swatting a fly, or pointing to some random in the stand like they effected your concentration. If you can't slow the game to the pace you want to you don't belong in Test cricket. Smitteh won't be hurried.

If Smith goes early this will be over by lunch. Australia is so dependent on him it's insane.

And btw, **** off Warner. Seriously **** off. Am so sick of his abject mediocrity and beating up on busted, weak attacks at home before looking like a six year old against anything decent away. Calling it now. Spud. Needs a run in reggies.

Seriously, next test is the last chance saloon for him afaic. Unless he goes big when it actually matters he can **** off out of the side.

straight swap for Uzi and Warner if we deem Warner as droppable or bring back burns or what

and is Jake Lehmann ever a chance? 2 solid FC seasons in a row now and being the coach's son probably means he doesn't have to do as much as most to get a chance

Cowan.

Though imagine Warner batting like he is on this tour and in SL and in England with TOTAB as skipper. Imagine him walking off with that "it's the way I play" attitude. Bloke would have had a Symonds Tusker protruding from his skull, and rightly so. WAC he is. Not worth a squirt of piss unless it's gun barrel.

Yeah, actually think if Oz start badly we could see the third recent example of India winning by an innings after the opposition scored over 400. The lack of reaction when they got Yadav’s wicket spoke volumes about how dispirited they were as a group.

Re: Warner, that period in 2014 when he scored 4 tons and two fifties in 6 away Test innings seems insane considering his away Test record before and after that period. Now currently has managed just one fifty in his last 15 away Test innings; even in NZ he didn’t do much when everybody else was cashing in.

I almost reckon those cheap centuries in dead rubber SCG Tests and on flat tracks in home ODIs have done Warner more harm than good as they probably made him think he’s better than he actually is and his game is on the right track; certainly the way the Ch 9 comms drool over him you’d think he and Smith were roughly as good Test players.
